So that others will follow suit. It's a fucking sad indictment of our times that people are too scared to come out in the world of football.

and what differance would that make ?

and does that mean any player who has made a lifestyle choice should declare it ?

A lifestyle choice?

It's not declaring it as such. More just being open and honest about who they are like almost everyone else. We know Mancini is married so why not know that Player X is in a civil partnership? And, crucially, not have an issue with it.

of course its a lifestyle choice

I choose not to shag fat birds but my mate always goes for them and his rational is
" he always gets laid "

some people choose to sleep with people of their own sex its a choice they make

there is no gay gene Fact !

it has been proved to be nurture not nature being gay is a chioce people make and I do defend their right to make that choice

just that some gay people seem to think they are some sort of sub species and are very precious about it

I'd love for Dzeko to come out, just to watch Bosnia collapse.

In all seriousness, I can see it happening in the next 5 years. Maybe somebody will do it post-retirement.

Is it necessary for any gay footballers to 'come out' and say so? Are straight folk really that bothered?
It's nothing to do with the straight folk. It's to do with gay people, footballers in this case, being able to be themselves. If one comes out, or is himself in public in other words, others will follow.

Gay footballers can still be gay and be themselves without the need to shout 'I'm gay!', surely? Why does it need a big fanfare. I'm not saying I'm against people being gay, either. All this 'coming out' malarkey screams of attention seeking and wanting to be liked. If your gay, fine. Who cares? Get on with your life.

Odds are that you would know, yes. But the vast majority didn't know who he was. And next thing he is on celebrity something or other and now my wife knows who he is! Why is that?

It made him famous because he was the first prominent Sportsman to be open about it and he also does alot of work with Anti Bullying Charities etc. Sanctimonious people harp on about how little trouble there is a Rugby - but Castleford were fined for their fans singing homophobic chants about him. Yorkshire doesn't strike me as being the most tolerant place sometimes...

He got the occasional comment at other grounds albeit from individuals rather homophobic chanting. It would be difficult for someone to come out as the first gay footballer who hadnt retired. Racist abuse of footballers only died down when every team had black players.

I thought it interesting what the ex Leeds player said about comments he'd heard from other players about sharing showers. How he couldnt understand why they thought that it would be a turn on for a gay player to share a shower with other men. I must admit that I often thought that it would feel strange to shower with a gay man, simply because I cant help thinking that I would find it a turn on to shower with naked women.

I posted this earlier in the thread:

I was fortunate enough to grow up not experiencing too much self-hatred and without depression, but I can fully relate to the fear youngsters have when they think they might be gay. The attitude towards homosexuality in high schools isn't especially pleasant. You hear stories of people being attacked because of who they fancy and, when you're growing up and find that you're attracted to your own gender, you don't want that life.

I can't speak for all gay people, but I would say most if not all go through a period of their growing up wishing they weren't gay. Wishing they were straight. Wishing they didn't have to hide their true self and spend their formative years scared of other people finding out about them.

Like I say, I was fortunate enough that the period I had of wishing I wasn't gay didn't last too long and I was able to accept it quite quickly (not that I was ready to tell anyone for years). If there was a choice in who I found attractive, I wouldn't be gay now, I'd have given it up at age 14.

I can choose who I have sex with, but that isn't sexuality. I could choose to sleep with a woman, but that wouldn't make me straight.

When was this proved? as far as im aware the debate goes on in that respect. no proof.

Why don't the FA supply gay colouring books to all players and officials? If we had a gay dot-to-dot in the matchday program it would also help.

if one of mufc player says he's gay, how will etihad be when they visit?

come to think of it, they should go first. imagine how the media fawn over them if they do it.
