Why did we let Zinchenko go?

Because he wanted to leave and we thought Cucu was all but signed?

In hindsight, left us chasing our tail looking a lb oh and the other lb was banged up.

Either way it hasn’t worked. We have good players who can step into that role but it is an area of weakness. Shame he wanted to leave really, same with Jesus. To play the football we do you need a certain type of player and we lost 2.

He isn’t a world class midfielder, he’s a world class inverted fullback. Players don’t have to stick to the position they decided to play in as a kid. Coaches can spot how their attributes have been mis-profiled, they can see how they can be used in other positions. Also, the game evolves, tactics evolve and different positions become more important. You aren’t born and assigned a fixed football position for life.

He wanted to leave. Pep probably thought as well he was getting another left back in Cucurella as a replacement

Ukrainian coach doesn’t see him as a LB that’s for sure

Vinny came to us as a midfielder, Fern had been played further forward, and Lee Bradbury was a goalscorer. Things change.
 
No idea. Watched him with Arsenal against Spurs today and he was superb. Won lots, plenty of forward passing, great runs. This is the same guy who played for City last season and he looks a top player with this team.
 
I liked Zinchenko a lot, and it's a shame he's gone.

However, I really don't think his absence has been the cause of our troubles. This season is similar to 19/20 in that we're good, but it's not quite clicking (we also had CB problems that season too). Zinchenko featured in a lot of games that season where we were poor and lost. He also missed half the season with injuries.

Why did we let him go? I'd guess a combination of him wanting to go and the club naively suspecting he'd be easier to replace than was actually the case.

That my friend I cannot tell you,as you will appreciate I’m not an avid watcher of Ukraine,however when I have seen them,and let’s be honest it was hard not to,especially in those play off games v scotch and welsh,and other odd games he’s been an attacking midfielder in all the games I’ve seen,so dunno,but the fact is,he was moulded into a LB at City,cause no other **** could do it

I always liked the idea of a left sided midfielder playing at left back. He contributed mightily to our performances but not particularly defensively. I recall the misplaced pass that nearly let Watford go one up in the final. He was very much 'the curate's egg' type of player - but will no doubt contribute mightily to the Arse's season.

I think that is what I think too. In the end he wouldn't have left if he didn't want to.
 
I doubt the Club hierarchy would have wanted both Jesus and Zinchenko to go to a Top 4 rival.

The fact Pep, and Arteta, are really good friends obviously playeda major part..Furthermore Arteta being a former employee highly likely played a part in the Club allowing the strange move to a Title rival in Arsenal.

Zin was such a big character in the dressing room.As he is now at Arsenal.

This one has come back to bite us in the Arse big time.

The fact Cancelo was rated as the better option only makes this one hurt even more.

No one could have foreseen Cancelo having a Car crash of a season to be fair.

I hope we learn from this huge mistake and never again strengthen a rival.

I will add .I have never met one blue who wanted Zinchenko to leaves us.

I agree with the attitude,you dont want to be here there is the Door.

I would say though certain Doors are closed Arsenal/Liverpool/Rags.

Go abroad.

I was only happy Sterling going Chelsea because it was obvious he was done at the Top level.And we robbed them :-)

Arsenal normally finish 5th-8th so I doubt they were seen as a rival. They hadn't been since Leicester won it.
