Why do we pander to Africa?

South Africa is a beautiful place, I spent six weeks there last year - amazing place. I was in Jo'burg for at least 10 days, hired a car and even stopped at traffic lights (shocking I know). Went all along the coast from East round to Cape town and had no trouble at all.

The press loves hyperbole. Yes, it is troubled, but don't beleive everything you read and hear.

That is a pretty weak definition you found. Doesn't mention at all insulting language used to describe people, and I find particularly the words "scum filled" to be quite insulting. He described South Africa as a scum filled place, so all South Africans are scum. Yeah, I think thats racist.

No Saying a country is scum filled is not racist, insulting maybe but not racist, as I said check the definition. You did what most libs do; you jumped on a left wing sensationalist bandwagon and assumed that anyone pointing faults in the continent of Africa is racist. FYI- the South African people are not a race......

So, I’ll ask again, are you going to apologise to the OP?

You never asked me to apologise in the first place, so I don't know where the "again" comes from. My answer is no, I don't see why I have to, as what he said was not completely correct. Views are always going to be challenged on an internet forum, if we all just passively agreed with each it would be pointless.

Also the thread title. Who is "we"? The British government didnt pick the World Cup to be hosted in South Africa, neither did the public.

I am personally astounded that the terrorist Mandela is lorded as some kind of hero to the hand wringing liberal sycophants I’m sick of seeing football teams ‘celebs’ banging on what an honour it was to meet him etc the man is as bad as the terrorist leaders of Al Queda, this is a man let us not forget who admits he ‘signed off’ the church street bombing in 1983 from his prison cell…..

true about his consent for church street. but it was part of a wider conflict. It was one of several bombings carried out by MK, 'spear of the nation', who targeted government and military targets. you could argue church street was a military target, 11 out of the 19 killed were military personnel, 2 more were the bombers themselves. still, 6 civilians were murdered.
the ANC claimed the attack was planned in response to a raid into lesotho by south african forces that killed 42 ANC supporters, including civillians.

I think of it as a wicked act of murder, but I don't forget the ANC were fighting for their lives, and the fight can be seen as a struggle for the most basic human rights for themselves and other coloureds and blacks.

of course you can read about 'spear of the nation', how they were formed (after many many years of oppression by the authorities), and how deeply mandela and the others thought about these issues. these accounts are part of a wider 'narrative' about the troubles in south africa.

it is fashionable in certain circles to call mandela a terrorist. it is a label that can be applied, but the ANC didn't turn to these tactics for years. it ignores the murderous oppression and denial of property and political freedom of the south african regime. it ignores what happened afterwards as well. mandela reunited a broken country. perhaps he was the only person who could do so, who could push through the policy of reconciliation that is a uniquely successful example of how to resolve such a bitter internal conflict. he left south africa united and free. that's why he is venerated.

crime is a huge problem in south africa, but the central areas are pretty safe. friends of mine have been going on holiday to jo'burg and cape town for decades. I am reliably informed they are spectacular and vibrant. it's not the third world. it's comparable to somewhere like rio. you follow the guidelines and you are safe. you go wandering or make a target of yourself and you are in trouble.

bizzbo, if you think BB2's going to acknowledge that post, you're sadly mistaken. he'll ignore it, and then set up his soapbox the next time he gets a chance on a different thread.

it's best to ignore the boy.

Which definition of 'race' are you using?

It's not racist to choose not to hold a World Cup in a crime filled, scum filled, dangerous, poor country.

When will people get this into their thick skulls.

I for one will not be taking my kids to the World Cup this year, and it pisses me off.

I take it you mean South Africa, a country that i have lived and worked in for the last 2 years now.

Now my friend, the vasy majority of the population is indeed poor, but when you said crime filled, scum filed and dangerous...lets be honest here, you could be talking about many many places around the world including England!

In other words, stop fucking talking bollox!

This wasn't the press making this stuff up. My wife's Uncle has lived there for over thirty years, which is a tad longer that your six weeks.

Would people please refer to things correctly as to avoid sweeping generalisations?
Africa is the Continent. South Africa is a Country on said Continent. Thank you.

I don't think I mentioned anything being made up. Maybe you should read my post again, out loud and slower this time.
