It is time that the 2 legged semi is dropped too.It's nowt to do with the EFL or PL. UEFA specify how teams qualify, though too many pundits don't seem to realise this.
Also, the LC was introduced in the early 60s to bring in more gate money. The competition rarely generated significant interest before the final was moved to Wembley in 1967 and a European place awarded to the winners. Prior to that the final was over two legs.
Stoke v City in the 63-64 semi-final was watched by 21,000 but the return at Maine Road was only 16,891, possibly because we lost the first game 2-0.
You can’t do it. The CL places can’t be given for award in cup competitions. The Dutch had to change their playoff system a few years ago because they were designed to fight for a Champions League place, now they are designed to fight for Europa League and Conference league places.Or even give a CL place to the winner?
I'm sure it's the FA that cam do that and not the PL.
It would make clubs kick off, but as you say they'd field their best teams to get a random entry into that competition should the draw drop favourably.
There is a reg making FA CUP mandatory. In the original 115 bodged charge sheet we were accused of not entering one year, because the brilliant PL did not realise that rules often changed numbers. I think we were also accused of not cutting the grass in accordance with regulations.Surprised the EFL prize money is so small. To the big clubs in the PL, it's almost literally worthless. We probably spend more than that on staples. That's not taking the piss, by the way. It's just a fact. I'm assuming there's some clause that clubs can't opt out of the competition. Because I'd guess that, if they could, they would.

The FA are on autopilot, seriously do they do anything? I’m convinced that you can go to the FA’s HQ on any given day and there will be no one there except the accountant who has to process all the expenses claims, although at this point I’m sure all the major players just have a credit card that has direct debit linked to it.

But this thread was started on how little money is available for the EFL cup. The championship is the 5th most watched league in Europe, so I think Sky would be more than happy to show it. Don’t forget, their beloved history club would have been in it this year as well. At least until they drew the mighty Grimsby…Take those teams out and the TV companies would pull out but if not pull out entirely certainly drop the money offered to show it
