Why is failure praised so much in this country?

The narrative driven by the press and fans in this country for any team bar city is incredible.

Klopp being lauded as one of the greatest managers in the pl era despite only winning one in 7 years and spending hundreds of millions to do that and now you see the same with arteta saying what he is doing is amazing despite being there 5 years and at present only winning 1 fa cup once again despite spending 100s of millions for it.

Do you think it is genuinely that narrative because it is against city or because it is the english disease to praise the plucky underdogs or something more sinister?

that is an extremely fair point and i didnt look at it that way, it just seems slightly disingenuous to praise those two for competing and then ignore others but yeah thats probably a better way to look at it really.
 
I don't think that it's failure in itself that is being praised, it's more like success is not encouraged in this country.
Remember Susan Boyle winning that talent contest years ago? X factor or some such nonsense? She was catapulted from obscurity to international fame almost overnight. Then the tabloids turned on her and she became vilified, ridiculed and mocked by the very people who helped start her journey to fame and fortune.

Build 'em up, knock 'em down seems to be the British media's mantra.
 
There's always been a 'soft spot' for the 'plucky British loser'! An outpouring of sympathy when our guy comes trailing in 49th out of 50!

But since the emergence of City as a dominant force in the PL the narrative has deepened to include anything NOT City and making out that it is precious, unique, and must be lauded endlessly.

I don't recall anything like the same narrative from the RDAHMeedya when the Rags were winning everything above ground, no when Liverpool were top dogs!

She came second to Diversity, but your point still stands.
 
It's not good for the working class to have many hero's as they may get ideas above their station. 'Look what happens to you if you get too successful' mantra. Our mantra should be 'stay in your lane'.
Have low expectations. Housing, life expectancy, getting treated at hospital, clean rivers/seas etc are things we shouldn't expect.
If you get too good you too may get 115 charges! Of course people who are successful get tempted into other stuff.
The Beckham case is interesting. Destroyed him after the sending off v the Argies and then let him have some sort of life, but he had to go abroad to do it.
