Why is it...

Beacuse the majority of football fans know next to nothing about football.

Not sure why, you go to rugby or cricket and probably most other sports and the crowds are very knowledgeable about their chosen sport.

Most football fans understanding of the game is players who run around a lot, waving their arms about and fouling everyone who comes near them, are good.

And those that dont are lazy bastards.

Because they only really watch City on Match of the Day and players like Barry don't stand out on there.
Spot on, and exactly what I was going to post. If you take MOTD as your football meal of choice, then you are missing so much. Barry never gets any 'highlight reels' on MOTD, therefore any Rags watching it won't understand how much we rate him. Added to that is the fact that he's not a media whore, so doesn't give interviews to journos every other week.

They do. Many a Villa fan was mortified when he was on his way out, and The Dippers, not renowned lately for spending wisely, were desperate for him. And how many England caps did he have before he came to us.

Gareth Barry is the nearest player we have had to replace Mike Doyle (God rest the lad).

Because he's the kind of player where unless you're watching the game for 90 minutes, week in, week out, he's not going to stand out. People are far more excited spunking over MOTD's coverage of players who do nothing for 89 minutes but do one bit of skill in the 12th minute. Barry is a class act, model professional, and a great asset to our side.

Exactly this. I always thought he was a decent tidy player without being great before we signed him. When you see him week in week out in the flesh, not just on TV then you realise how good he is. Because is passing is so excellent, when he misplaces a pass, it really stands out. It's the same with Yaya. It seems like they give the ball away more than they do simply because you remember it because ity happens so rarely (if that makes sense.)

They are the same people who think Johnson is one of our best players and should play every game because of a few minutes of highlights

Because he's surrounded by stars at City, and he himself, isn't a star name.

He was out-paced by Ozil at the WC, which lead to Germany scoring.

He doesn't really snarl, or slide into tackles. In other words, he doesn't do anything that obviously stands out.

The media cream themselves over the other English player who plays in roughly the same position (Parker is a good player mind).

He's not controversial, so he's never really newsworthy.

Probably a combination of those reasons.

Exactly. Never mind the fact that Ozil is good and fast enough to play at Real Madrid and that Barry was the only England player back defending; "he's shit".

I almost enjoy the fact that many people wrongly don't rate him, it lets you know sooner rather than later if someone's opinion on football is even worth listening to, and if it's not worth listening to, you can just ignore them and save valuable seconds of your life.
