Of course we are not out of the league (yet), I agree.
But to be fair, last year's situation was not something to be relied upon. I don't see the rags making the same mistake twice. The Everton 4-4 was a freaky result (not least in that Moyes didn't just hand over the points as per normal). The Wigan result arguably even more freaky.
And then yes it was 8 points, but realistically more like 5 when you consider they had to come to us and we were playing damned well by then and our place is a fortress.
If we go to -9 after this weekend, that will be an enormous hill to climb to overhaul them. Just think about that: They would have to drop 10 points *more* than we drop, and we have to go to the swamp as well.
Lose on Saturday and the season is lost, imho.
For someone with 4800 posts on a City forum, you don't half seem to spend a lot of time defending the rags.
And you seem incapable of taking the blue-tinted specs off.
By the way, where on earth have I been praising the rags? I loathe them. But unfortunately history shows us that normally and very very irritatingly, they deliver the goods. Last year's finale would not have been so spectacular if they normally fuck up. Normally, they don't.
Didn't say you have been praising them, said you were defending them - and again in the above post ;-)
You've also missed a significant chunk of what I posted.
The fact of the matter is their most recent season bore 0 trophies. This season has seen their defence ship 23 goals in 16 league games, 5 goals in their 2 League Cup games and 5 goals in 5 Champions League games.
Compare that to the freaky results in April/May when they conceded just 6 goals in 8 games and that suggests to me (as we all know) their defence has significant problems.
Whilst they are still in the Champions League, FA Cup and the hunt for the League, they need to improve their defence. Can they afford to buy anyone? I don't know their finances so couldn't say for certain, but I imagine, following the Van Persie purchase (£65m deal - £24m purchase + £10.4m wages p.a. over 4 years) the strings may be pulled a little tighter.
They point to the loss of Vidic, but he has been out for something like 12 months; so, is their manager a fool for not buying cover/replacement of sufficient quality? Will Vidic still be of the same quality given the lenght of the lay off? Will it cost them in the long run - as said, they have 3 fronts on which to fight; do they fuck one/two battles off and put their eggs in one basket? If they do that which will it be?
This historically being stronger, coming good overall etc hasn't been the case for over 12 months. That kind of shit gets into the psyche and causes doubts. The piss can seems to have taken the Keegan approach (you score 3, we'll score 4) and that is just not sustainable.
There will be alarm bells ringing over there, just like with us, despite their position. Pressure-wise, it is all on them to come up with the goods knowing that City, despite being rankly pissed off at being out of Europe and losing the derby, have (on paper) an easier season ahead of them compared to their's.
If that's blue-tinted specs of me, then fair enough, it's all about opinions I guess.
