Why we are misfiring...

We've always been poor on the counter under Mancini.

Er, 6-1 at the swamp? Breathtaking counter attacking goals.

And what about that sublime Dzeko - AJ - Aguero counter attack against Arsenal?

We CAN do it, but for some reason we chose to just dick about most of the time. I have no clue why.

Not many teams leave themselves as short of numbers at the back against us as arsenal and united did

And that in itself is half the problem. Teams come to the Etihad thinking they will get hammered if they try to play expansive football against us. We have to accept that as Champions, the opposition by and large will set up differently. They are trying to keep it compact, defending deep and hoping to scrape a 0-0 draw or maybe a 1-0 at best. They are MUCH harder to break down that last season.

We are having a good season now. Last season was exceptional, no season should be compared taking last season as the base. Only problem this season is we are not prolific in front of goal.

plain and simple, tempo. not one team to date has had to put up with the way we would break out of defence as we did last season, especially in the sick swan. we need to sort it and sort it quickly.

No NDJ, no AJ, there workrate(ndj) and skill(aj) have gone, replaced with???
not the full answer but must contribute to an answer to the OP.

Not a negative post just a possiblity.

Peple say we have a hard job breaking up defences because they sit back deep always when we attack.

We give a lot of time for them to do that because when they attack and we get the ball back they dont have to sprint back to sit back deep if they would just slowly walk back they could still organize themselves back because we making slow passes at the back and between midfielders.

Imagine a fast Maicon down the right vs 1 opponent and compare that to the current situation when he has 2-3 defenders to block his run/cross.

Our pace is horribly slow when it is about changing from defending to attacking. It is not about counter attacks.
It is simply the way to build up our attacks. When they make a cross Hart takes it what happens after that at us and at other top teams?

We dont have the option to push Yaya up at the moment...

Mancini doesnt trust Garcia, so Yaya has to stay in the middle..

agreed, as previously posted the loss of nigel (at any price) was sheer madness.

Another of Mancini's shortcomings IMHO. He basically takes a snap decision whether he likes you or not, and if it's not, you are toast. He never liked Nigel and in the more recent games hardly ever played him. Same with AJ. Same with Adebayor.

Didn't matter whether Nigel stayed or not - he wasn't getting picked.

What about Barry though, Milner (injured I know), even Nasri could sit deeper?

Said that a page or two back; no pace in our attacks. We are so slow in getting the ball forward, and it gives the opposition time to get players back into covering positions.
