Wildlife

Whats the state of play near you? Saw a couple of deer today - we get hedgehogs in our garden at night - numerous types of birds in the gardens and on the feeders. We have a one-legged pheasant that pops in - no squirrels sadly. We have some little mice that live under the tumble dryer in the garage and there are rabbits galore. Have seen a stoat or something similar run across the road in the last couple of weeks and there are loads of farmed animals like cows and alpaca's. With the leaves on the trees and longer days all the wildlife helps me remember why I live here.

Things are a lot quieter now that winter is approaching.

I nailed some sunflower heads to the bird feeder and soon had about six Blue Jays around and a Northern Flicker, although he was more interested in any bugs in the bark of the tree. A couple of weeks ago I saw a Cardinal, but unfortunately that seemed to be a fleeting visit.

I recently shot a Crow out in the field and about a week later a Red-Tailed Hawk made a few visits to it for lunch. I often see him sweeping over the fields of sweetcorn either side of me looking for something for dinner.

After coming back from vacation, I found sweetcorn from the adjoining fields stashed in my potato patch and various other locations around the place. Then I noticed the culprit, a bloody squirrel. Needless to say, he’s stopped doing it now and with the leaves dropping, I found a drey right at the top of one of the trees, so that had a barrel for good measure.

The Turkey Vultures are still gracefully floating around the sky. They look so beautiful up there, it’s a shame they are one of the ugliest looking birds close up.

Now it’s starting to get a little cooler, I am starting to catch more mice in the shed and now the total has pushed up to 15.

There’s usually a Skunk mooching around and about outside at night. I leave him alone as long as he helps reduce any slug population. I’ll trade off his occasional digging up the lawn if he’s eating Cutworm and Japanese Beetle larvae. Although I’ll tolerate him, I won’t Raccoons. Also get a few Coyotes around and the occasional Fox or two, but they are not encouraged and they would be best keeping away for their own good.

This fortunate weather will change shortly and the snow will probably follow. It’s surprising what ‘invisible’ life there is around the house looking at the trails and footprints in the snow the following morning. I may even get a Snowy Owl make my area his patch when winter really sets in. A beautiful sight.

Then it’s a case of getting winter out of the way, because I love to see the birds back in the springtime.

Same here - autumn and the birds leaving I feel desperately sad - the lack of birdsong outside leaves a deafening silence that weighs heavy on me whereas spring and the birds returning is a joyous period,

We've been visited a lot this last gew weeks by a good sized pack of Coyotes, amazing how loud they are . Mule deer and moose have already moved into town, particularly my back yard, I've almost walked into several deer the last couple of nights

Deer and Moose shooting season over here. Moose are usually a few miles north of us, but plenty of deer.
