Will City Ever Sing Argentina?

Now there's no way to verify this, unless anyone else remembers, but when the Argentinians first landed civilians on South Georgia, it was treated as a bit of a joke and there was a (small) chant of "Argentina Argentina" in the Kippax - I presume the day after (March 20th 1982 v Everton) - I think by the time of the next home match they'd invaded the Falklands and it wasn't a joke anymore. The chant was nothing to do with players, and couldn't really have been an anti-Thatcher thing at that stage, just a bit of a joke reaction to a joke invasion by scrap men after rusty old equipment.

I'll not get started on the politics of it.

This is the thing... soldiers and those who sympathise with state violence always say "we just do what we're told - it's not our fault" and yet they're usually the first to hate the individual on the opposing side who would say the exact same thing. Even worse they collectivize this outrage to encompass millions of people, a whole nation, the children of that generation and even a flag. I'm sorry but if that isn't brainless behaviour I really don't know what is.

this is probably the most offensive post I have read on any message board in the past ten years. I have served OUR country for over 19 years and risked my life and had friends killed to ensure YOUR right to freedom and your right to spout sh1te like this. DONT EVER fcukintell me and the countless thousands of other ex-servicemen and women that have risked their lives of brainless behaviour.
At least we have the guts and the balls to stand and be counted when OUR country needs us.

Think you'll find the appeasment was before 1939 mate. But you knew that anyway.
My issue is that you've made a sweeping statement about "soldiers" that I doubt you're in any way qualified to make.

Goodnight.

I didn't make the intial comment, however we went to war because we had to not because of some higher moral reason. Correct me if I'm wrong but if we could have got away with it we'd have stayed well clear? How can you presume to know anything about me by the way? You've never met me.

Ha ha it was late.....;-)

Sorry to contradict you but there was no way we would've been able to stay out of the war.Hitler considered us his "brothers in arms" and rumours abounded that he offered us a deal to join the Nazis and dominate Europe.
We already had a deal with Poland that should they be attacked it would be the "final straw."
Churchill knew the writing was on the wall.

We would've been brought into the war eventually. At one point we were the only thing that stood between total Nazi domination of Europe. Some would argue that the Battle of Britain, fought by pilots only just out of their teens is the most important battle this country ever fought-had we lost then I doubt we would ever have had this discussion.

Mind you-seeing as how both my Dad and Grandad are ex-RAF I would say that.:-)

That's why some of the comments made in this thread are just totally unrealistic and downright unfair on the men and women that do the "dirty work" of the Government of the day and-why I saw my arse.

law74-I for one salute you mate-I totally understand your points.
It's not the fault of the front-line soldiers if the politicians running the show are pricks.
Like I said earlier, it's very easy to get the sociology text-books out when the freedoms and the sacrifices of others are the very things that have given you the chance to do so.

no way, we're city not fuckin argentina, besides the rags sang it i'd rather distance myself from being involved in wot rags say, do, or think wether old or new
