It's Carvalho's first season in the first team, so he's still a work in progress (opposed to Fernando, who'd been at his peak for 3 or 4 years already). That being said, all reports and people I've talked to were pretty favourable about both players, but Sporting bossed the game and the midfield battle (especially after Fernando limped off injured). William has been very impressive in the big league games against Porto and Benfica aswell, he seems to thrive on the big occasions. That he is even genuinely competing with Fernando for the holding role in the Portuguese NT is a hell of an accomplishment.

Fernando is probably the better player at the moment, but William is going to cruise past him, he has so much more to his game. It's remarkable how quickly he's become a dominant part of the team

He seems awkward on the ball

Second year of first team, he played 32 matches for Cercle Brugge last season.

He is from Benfica's rival Sporting Lisbon but even we see that William is such a great player, we think he really is the next big thing in Portuguese midfield national team, very solid, good positioning and good technique, just need to grow 1/2 years and became a top player. He could be one of the World Cup revelations.

That's just a rehash of an A Bola article where Sporting just said that he's not for sale in January except if someone makes a ridiculous offer. The 30m is just made up by A Bola I think, claiming that's the amount to get Sporting to even "start talking". Safe to say he's probably not going anywhere. I think with the way the squad is now, we need to be taking a view on some younger players like this. Buy Fernando and have him ready to go, or buy a slightly "raw" younger option who potentially could be one of the star players...

Vidal, Pogba... I think there are certain positions you can nurture young players and defensive midfield is one, as long as they have the key attributes, which this guy does. He will learn a lot from yaya and fernandinho, he looks to be a good reader of the game, quick and good at passing/ comfortable on the ball - those are the basics. It is at centre back/ striker that we need to pay the larger sums to get ready made players. Midfield is somewhere I feel we can nurture a player like Carvalho, even if it takes him a season to get up to speed. Garcia will never develop pace, so there is a limit to his potential. This guy, as I said, has the basic attributes so would be worth the money. The way he is talked about it doesn't sound like much of a gamble.

For what it's worth http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/william-carvalho/profil/spieler_100131.html values him at £7 million. Since we're dealing with Sporting you'd probably need at least double that?
