Wimbledon 2023 | Alcaraz beats Djokovic in the final

I wasn’t/am not bashing the BBC just stating a fact and asking a question! Sorry. :-)
Understood EB, and my apologies in return. It’s just that it can be a bit like Groundhog Day on here sometimes regarding that organisation.

There just seem to be lots of threads that descend into BBC Bingo including one or all of:
Defund the BBC
I don’t pay my licence fee anyway
Woke
Snowflakes
Jimmy Saville
Fulfilling a quota
Box ticking
Rolf Harris
It’s the BBC, what do you expect?

And so on.

I agree, like virtually all of us I think, that their website/football offering is awful and has a blatant and long-standing bias against us, but I feel that seems to get used a starting point by some to launch into a tirade against the whole organisation on a regular basis on here.

I think I read the first page and thought it was more of the same - apols EB.

(And I don’t follow the tennis much, but from what I’ve seen on the cricket I think Isa Guha is a good presenter!)

The BBC we see now is a different animal to the one we held dear, take it round the back and end it's days ;)

Aww thank you @chesterbells that’s kind of you. My thoughts on Auntie Beeb are that the football coverage is not of the best but then my friends who support other clubs (I know, I know how can I have that sort of friend) say the BBC don’t like their teams either!
I trust their news service more than most of the others and I enjoy a lot of their programmes.
However my other thoughts are that the licence fee I pay is, to my mind, similar to paying for SKY, Virgin or whatever. Plus it’s cheaper. (So I only object to paying because they took the free licence off the over 70s! *lol* selfish of me.) Maybe naive but that’s me. :-)

As for Wimbledon I used to love it and most years it seemed to fall in a holiday for at least one week and from 2.00 pm I was watching. Even one year, when my TV plug was blown from the wall in a thunder and lightning storm, changing the plug so quickly I only missed one game of the set! It was the year Virginia Wade won. :-)
Now I am not so bothered. They seem more like robots and wham bam thank you Ma’am without the personalities of yore. But maybe that’s me being an old codger or curmudgeon!! :-)

Wimbledon tennis starts tomorrow 3rd July. I thought I’d look at my Radio Times (other listings magazines are available) to see who is replacing Sue Barker.
Clare Balding ok fair enough she’s not unfamiliar with tennis and has covered Wimbledon for a few years alongside Sue. However I then see that ‘the faces of Wimbledon’ this year with Clare are Isa Guha and Qasa Alom. Fair enough I thought they must be ex-tennis players or have commentated but then I looked them up!
Isa is an ex-cricketer who has played for the England women’s team. No mention in the two bios I looked at of her ever playing tennis.
Qasa is a ‘YouTube filmmaker with a passion for climate change and sustainability’. Again no mention of tennis!
Now I’m sure they are both very good at their jobs but I’m also sure that there are tennis people who are very knowledgeable about tennis who are available!

Is it me or has the world gone mad? :-)
No Tracy Austin ? oh well Tour De France for me then ;-)

Really laughed out loud at that post. I went to make a cuppa that afternoon and debated about washing up…the washing up won! I couldn’t stand it either. :-)

I try and watch the French Open and do enjoy it. Don’t bother with the US or Aus Opens though, don’t know why.

The good thing about All-England Championships (aka Wimbledon), is that it commences just as my busiest period in work ends. So I’m home earlier in the afternoon in time to watch a bit of stress free sport.

It’s not the same without Federer and Nadal though (even to a lesser extent, Murray). We were spoilt having those two (/three) and Djokovic all at their peak around the same time.

Liam Broady is a City fan so always hope he does well (though he usually doesn’t).

As for presenters, I always think - like you get with athletics, cricket, rugby league and many other sports - it’s better to have presenters who’ve played the game. But it’s not essential; look at Mark Chapman. Chappers presents the rugby league for the BBC and has spent time learning the game and spending time with the players like Jamie Peacock who has has as a pundit with him, and he’s picked his brain and really done his homework on the sport… and it shows.

And you can really tell when presenters haven’t!

Laura Woods, for example in the footy. You can tell she knows little about the sport and it comes across in the way she talks and what questions she asks.

I like watching the tennis but that whole incident summed up what I don't like about Wimbledon. All the crap about tradition, wearing white, strawberries and creme, it's all so stuck in the past, plucky losers and all that. I feel it has it's head stuffed too far up it's backside. As I said I do like watching the actual tennis though.
