Wolves (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

The fact we ran 10km more that the dippers in our first game of the season is a good sign. All of the best Pep City sides had the ability to run the opposition in to the ground week in week out as fundamental base of our playing style. That and we looked technically really strong . Is truly pleasing.

I think there’s something very distasteful about wolves fans. I went yesterday with my 2 lads, fourth year running at Molyneux and I actually told my youngest not to wear his City shirt yesterday because he’d had shit there after the match the previous 3 years when he was 13, 14 and 15. Not had any mither at any other ground in that time, always wolves. I’ve had a strike recently and just wanted to avoid any of that shit yesterday and fortunately did.

What also struck me yesterday was the utterly two faced nature of the wolves fans. I distinctly recall Diogo Jota getting booed there when he went back with liverpool and I googled it this morning and lo and behold an article from Stephen Warnock in December 2021 noting Jota had every touch roundly booed by the wolves fans. Now I get the tribute yesterday, I obviously joined in the applause for him as did my kids and every other Blue as far as I can see. I also get the fact that it was more intense yesterday as he used to play for them. But the constant Diogo, Diogo, once a wolf always a wolf (I think that’s what they were singing, hard to tell with that accent), but no lads, get it right, you loved him when he played for you, but you booed the fuck out of him when he’d left you, but now he’s died (which is very very sad) don’t forget how you treated him like shit when he left you, not like some sort of long lost and dear beloved son.
Maybe youve just had some bad luck at the Molyneux as my lad always wears a City top and has never had any grief off their fans. More issus with one of ours but that's another story.
We actually found quite a few of their fans to be really decent and knowledgeable, wishing us luck for the rest of the season.
Guess you do get dickheads everywhere though.

A little under the radar: Gonzalez. Combinations help individuals thrive, and he was a major reason for the freedom that Reijnders enjoyed.

92% Accurate passes
3/3 Successful dribbles
1/2 Accurate Long balls
2/3 Tackles won
1 Block
2 Clearances
4 Recoveries
1 Interception
9/10 Ground Duels won (90%)
1/2 Aerial duels won
3 times fouled

Was a relief to see him in the starting line up

I thought he was steady, 7 out of 10. Pretty sure we'd have known about it (not in a good way) if we hadn't have had him in there anchoring the midfield

City fans so quiet today until we took the lead, it sounded that way on sky anyway
Gotta admit there were a few times yesterday when Wolves countered esp the offsides goal that seemed to take an age to call .. i was quiet as a fucking mouse with cats lurking just feeling that crestfallen feeling that happened so many times last season as just a matter of time.

Am I the only one who thought we didn't actually look that amazing yesterday. Against better opposition we would have been 1/2 down at half time.
It was a good start, and we cannot say any more than that. I have watched all of the contenders this weekend and we looked the best of the bunch. It is far too early to draw conclusions though.

I cannot remember a clear Wolves chance that we were not in control of - thinking of the 'goal' when JS stepped out to make the attacker offside, and the shot that JT had covered. Our chances were clear cut, and we were pretty ruthless in comparison. I don't think there will be a Wolves fan out there who won't be thinking that we were well worthy of the win.

We have issues down the flanks. Wolves didn’t have the quality to exploit them but a better team would. The thing is at this point of the season none of the other clubs seem to be showing that quality either. Early days.

Every team that plays a high line can be exploited with a ball beyond the full-back. I was chatting to a Liverpool fan who said exactly that.
If you are speaking of issues with our attacking wide players, I don't agree.

I thought he was excellent yday just needs to stop feigning injury so much. Not the elbow thing that looked painful

Yes pal. Or maybe you got lucky yesterday

So I found this average position map, and I thought it was quite interesting, it definitely matches what I saw.

We started as a 433 on paper, and while alot of our players are very flexible and do alot of rotations which I love, ultimately, we somewhat resembled a 343 diamond with Lewis as the RCM, and RAN playing quite deep almost in a back 3.

And this makes sense because I noticed RAN hardly attacked as much as Lewis, and this also allowed Reijnders to push into more of a 10 role (he is #4 btw), with Bernie slightly deeper on the left.

This was total midfield control with the 4 players, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Pep continue this, not as if its a new formation or anything, he has done it before.

Now also interesting, once all the subs were made, this is the new average positions:

This I also find interesting because now you see a midfield 4 AGAIN, but using Cherki as a false 9 rather than the RB, here you can see Nunes staying further back to be slightly more safe/bait the press.

Marmoush and Bobb (7 and 52) are actually the furthest forward, almost like inside forwards at times once Cherki came on.

Interesting, thank you

Season off to a Flyer...

It was the first game of the new season after an oddball pre-season. We were scintillating at times, but a bit disjointed at others.

The thing that stood out was our increased physicality, pace & the general legs we had, which was a welcome change from the sluggish displays of last season.

There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the make-up of the squad, the tactics, formation & who would start the season opener, & there was a few surprises.

A fit John Stones starting was a welcome sight. Trafford made the most of the break he was given because of the transfer speculation surrounding Ederson, & he didn't disappoint.

The other surprises were Bobb & Lewis starting. I feel for Bobb because last season looked like being a breakout one for him before his unfortunate leg break.

He's essentially kick-starting his breakout season again, & yesterday he showed huge promise. Again, Bobb benefited because of the transfer speculation surrounding Savinho, & he certainly made the most of his opportunity.

Reijnders followed up his CWC & pre-season promise with a top-class display, & looks the absolute dogs bollocks! What a player! He has pace, he can control the tempo, he can carry the ball, he can pick a pass, & boy does he know where the back of the onion bag is. Simply brilliant!

Credit has also to be given to Gonzalez as he quietly, but very effectively went about his business with a solid & very effective display. I feel Nico's City career starts from here, & considering how 'Plodri' started his career, Gonzalez looks like a promising deputy for 'Godri', hopefully for years to come.

Debut boy... Debut goal...

Cherki is going to be an absolute superstar maverick! I just love the way he drops deep & demands the ball, dictating attacks from deep. His goal was superbly taken, & I can't see it being too long before the clamour for him to start regularly becomes too much to ignore. £34m? WTF! Lol :-)

I felt for Doku. RAN was obviously told to play more defensively, which again left Jeremy isolated facing 3 players. Midway through the first half, I noticed the brilliant Bernardo moved over to the left to support him, & this started to pay dividends.

Moose fared much the same when he came on, so this left sided isolation is something we urgently need to work on & resolve.

With concerning rumours of a £30m Forest bid for Lewis, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Rico confirmed his determination to remain at City & fight for his place.

Most people expected Nunes to start at RB against Wolves, so seeing Rico had gotten the nod was more than a pleasant surprise & surely a reassuring statement of confidence & support in the academy graduate, from Guardiola.

"For me, I've never, ever seen myself at a different club," Lewis said. "I've always wanted to play for City. It's my dream club, and like you see today, when I'm playing with the kind of players that I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy."

I've always been a huge fan of Lewis, regardless of many City fans getting on his back & wanting him sold. His age, height & size have been challenging for him. Teams target him for hatchet treatment knowing it could upset his balance, rhythm & confidence, but something looked very different about him against Wolves.

He looks like he's bulked up & toughened up. I also understand he's taken up boxing training to help achieve both, plus his stamina was visibly better.

Rico was absolutely fantastic, & put down a marker for a starting place at RB. His versatility will also be invaluable as he can play inverted in a double pivot, or as a number 8. Our Rico's maturing nicely!

Another telling point from the weekend was how 'meh' Guardiola looked after the game. He didn't look happy at all in the post match interview, but the post match presser probably revealed what was narking him.

Pep stressed the point about the squad being too big, & said we have two weeks to speak to players & their agents to resolve the issue. I didn't know what to make of our line-up with Doku, Bobb & Lewis starting, but it seemed more than a coincidence that O'Reilly was brought on as a substitute, considering who was on the bench.

Another surprise was Khusanov getting the substitute nod over Aké & Akanji (who I both rate). HOWEVER, we can only have 25 in the squad & 17 non-HG players. Something has to give, & soon!

The line-up & tactics vs Spuds, & the lead up to the closing of the transfer window promises to be intriguing.

Ederson to Galatasary & Donarumma in? How will Trafford feel?

Savinho to Spuds & Rodrygo in? Doesn't Rodrygo prefer to play on the left?

Gundog, Aké & Akanji deemed surplus to requirements? Will this mean we can keep Echeverri for the season?

I suppose all will be confirmed soon enough.
