Woman leaves her baby to die while she goes shopping

1 year for killing a baby
8 years for running a cannabis farm
Fucking loony tunes.

This woman probably can’t believe her luck and it’s hardly a deterrent for her or any other idiot of the same ilk.

It's been proven beyond all doubt for decades that high prison sentences are not a deterrent to crime, we know that from statistical analysis and psychological research. Giving this woman life imprisonment would not stop anyone else doing what she did.

These threads would be so much shorter if people just admitted they're only interested in vengeance instead of dressing it up in fake concerns for justice or preventing future crime.

She let a baby die, you want her punished harshly enough to make you feel better, that's it.

In reply to Dom's post (I can't comment directly as there is some sort of glitch) there is a deterrent in the sense that a career burglar who completes a five year sentence instead of a one year sentence is unable to carry out burglaries for four more years in the former sentencing scenario.

It's not just about being a deterrent though, it's about adequately punishing crimes that do happen. You shouldn't need a deterrent for this crime. You'd hope people generally didn't want to kill their own children. For those that do you'd want a severe punishment. At no point does anyone who kills a child concern themselves with how long they might go away for.

The lessons of Baby P not being heeded it seems when it comes to SS. Don't know if there's a lack of funding or what the reasons are for incidents like this but there's got to be something amiss that allows poor kids like this to fall through the cracks and the country being left with anther tragic death of a defenceless baby.

That's exactly I said in the last line of my comment.

I replied to someone speaking about it being a deterrent by pointing out it's not a deterrent.

That's not what the word deterrent means.

You're going into recidivism, which again, isn't helped by longer sentences, but is one of the main pillars of our sentencing laws.

From Cambridge online dictionary:

to prevent someone from doing something or to make someone less enthusiastic about doing something by making it difficult for that person to do it or by threatening bad results if they do it.

I think the first part of the definition stands up pretty well to be honest.

So that's ok then, why jail her at all? As long as she says she's very sorry and won't kill anymore babies, let's let her off and be nice.
