Woman leaves her baby to die while she goes shopping

The lessons of Baby P not being heeded it seems when it comes to SS. Don't know if there's a lack of funding or what the reasons are for incidents like this but there's got to be something amiss that allows poor kids like this to fall through the cracks and the country being left with anther tragic death of a defenceless baby.

I wonder if that's the reason the punishment is so slack? Missed signs from SS which could have prevented this from happening in the first place. The defence claim she had post-natal depression and being a single Mum and suffering from that would be horrific, SS should be supporting a parent through that time and being aware that there was a threat to both the baby and the Mum's life. But it's also a good excuse for the defence to throw in there and I haven't read enough about it to know how true that claim is. It would explain the leniency, and I'm sure our inhouse lawyers will tell us in legal terms why the sentence fits.

So that's ok then, why jail her at all? As long as she says she's very sorry and won't kill anymore babies, let's let her off and be nice.
Are you satisfied with that punishment?

Well I struggle to see what it achieves for anyone.

It’s not going to stop any babies dying in the future, it’s not going to help this obviously mentally ill woman who isn’t a risk to the public.

I’d much sooner she was sent to a psychiatric facility for enough time to get over her post-natal depression and drug dependence and whatever damage letting her baby die has done.

No one raised red flags when a new mother didn’t come to see her newborn in hospital, when nurses noticed she wasn’t bonding with the child no one took it further, it turned up with a broken leg and social services didn’t do anything. She started using drugs and no one around her did anything.

I would rather spend the money on addressing those things than locking someone up.
