I remember learning about nazism in school and not being able to get my head around it. I just couldn't comprehend how millions of jews were slaughtered in what was a relatively civilised European society. I remember just thinking, wow the world was really a different place back then. Jump forward 15 years and I am now seeing extremism in my own country. I'm seeing a poor guy beheaded in a london street. I'm seeing people blaming a whole religion, and certain races. I am seeing a murder turning into a race issue and political propoganda. And all I can think is fuck, how naive was I back in school. The world isn't so different.
+1
Best post of the thread sadly. We aren't any different. People are easily corruptible: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment The people with a check on their emotions, whose logic and questioning overrides emotion, are probably, indeed, according to the results of both those famous studies, in the minority.

I agree we aren,t any different, we only think we are, and that is dangerous. When you learn about history and study the circumstances leading up to certain events, such as war, you feel that the outcome was obvious, I guess you would call it hindsight. Hand on heart I can see serious civil unrest in this country sooner or later, lets hope I am wrong.

Instead of the pointless uproar in the streets last night i wish people would just see these blokes for the murderers they are. The best way of standing in the face of what has happened is not by blaming Muslims or anything similar but by donating and buying a help for heroes t-shirt and sticking two fingers up at these blokes.

Time to don the tin helmet and put my head above the parapet. And please excuse me if my grammar is not 100% correct, I am aware that if I miss a full stop out I immediately get classed as a racist.
There are certain sections within our society who need to take a long hard look at themselves, do they want to fully integrate or only partially, there can only be one rule of law within a country. People, and that means government, cannot challenge what is being allowed to happen within certain communities without being accused of racism, it is always the first card that is played as soon as this happens. How many more times will we read of "radicalised" young people carrying out atrocities under the guise of religion. We have allowed our country to be classified as a terrorist base and anyone with a UK passport is put in the "risk" category when entering another country.
I do not pretend to know anything about the 2 people (?) who carried out the atrocity yesterday but if the press stories are correct, and if my ears did not deceive me, then this attack was carried out using religion as a justification.
My thoughts are with the victim, his family and friends and to the people who were unfortunate enough to witness the terrible events of yesterday.
Misplaced question mark aside ;) , radicalised young people are, I fear, a result of the disorientation and perceived alienation of the first generation offspring of immigrants. Who here remembers all the weird Rastafarian shit from the 70s and 80s? Not feeling part of the UK culture and not feeling part of their parents' West Indian culture, particularly when visiting the West Indies, they were susceptible to a corrupted view of religion involving ganja and Emperor Haile Selassie.

However these first generation Muslims are much more dangerous because Islam is an established, global religion and Western leaders have been stirring up trouble in Muslim countries during all of living memory.

It would take a generation or two for it all to settle down, if we were to have the time and the influx of new immigrants diminished to a level where assimilation into UK culture became an easy option. However, I fear that immigration, or specifically the establishment of self-sustaining immigrant 'communities', has gone too far already and that it will take much longer for whole communities to assimilate. Look at Northern Ireland.

Condolensces to the poor guy and his family, and to those who actually witnessed anything of those sickening events, which will surely live with them all their lives.
Ironically enough, I thought the guy trying to preach with blood on his hands, and whilst holding a knife and meat cleaver, was the personification of a swivel eyed looney.

BB 's fascism thread (probably the most worthwhile he has ever posted) was very apt.

The hatred that has resurfaced because a person has been murdered is terrifying.

The fact we have a very powerful establishment will stop this turning into a war. It will be used just enough to suit their needs.

Yes,I did type that correctly, our establishment will use this hate to get their goals. Just as they always have.

I don't think civil war is on their agenda.

Woolwich killing sparks calls to monitor internet and email
23/05/2013 - 07:50:34

The brutal terrorist killing of a man on the streets of London sparked calls for the Government to revive plans to extend internet and email monitoring powers to the security services.

Former independent reviewer of terror laws Lord Carlile said it should provoke a “pause for thought” on the decision to drop the planned Communcations Data Bill from the Queen’s Speech.

And Labour ex-home secretary Lord Reid said such measures were “essential” to combating terrorism, warning it could otherwise take “some huge tragedy” to show the decision was wrong.

Full-scale legislation was dropped from last month’s Queen’s Speech in the face of Liberal Democrat opposition to what critics dubbed a “snooper’s charter”.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had warned scrapping the plans would put national security at risk by making it harder to bring terror suspects and other criminals to justice.

But Deputy British Prime Minister Nick Clegg blocked the change, insisting the wide-ranging proposals would create a “treasure trove of data” that was neither workable nor proportionate.

Ministers are now in talks with internet firms over alternative law changes.

I called it on the original thread that was shut down. Next we'll have all that ID card stuff rearing its ugly head again.
