For the life of me I can't work out what the answer is, and I challenge anyone to come up with an answer. To me, things are going to have to come to a head before it gets any better.

That simply won't work. Regardless of our foreign policy, the damage has been done.
I'm more concerned with who has the guts to come out and really make a difference in this time of negativity. I think the media now have an OBLIGATION to educate and guide instead of sensationalise and divide.
the taliban use gorilla warfare, it will go on for years as they continue to recruit and brainwash.
