World Cup 2026

I don’t because the WC is the pinnacle for the footballers themselves and great for the fans too but I get where you’re coming from. I don’t think it should have been in America or Canada as neither have a big history in football, okay South America does. The WC is about the fantastic colour the fans bring to the tournament, or should bring. We’ll have to see how vibrant this one is or if it is a damp squib.
Having been in Toronto just over a week ago, I can tell you that the city is going nuts over it.

World Cup logos and paraphernalia everywhere. How this translates to the fans, we'll have to wait and see.

I shall not be watching one minute of this repulsive event. Only one country in the world, and only under this president, could think that they could impose such conditions on fans, players, even referees.
And FIFA bends over and drops their trousers for them.

I'm going to give it a miss too.

Might spend some of the time re-reading JG Ballard's dystopian 1981 SF novel Hello America.

For those who don't know the book, Charles Manson features as the 45th President. At one point he grabs the main character and declares “Together, Wayne, we will make America great again!”

It isn't regarded as one of Ballard's best works, but in terms of pre-cog he wasn't far off, was he?

Not on topic, but I've always been a huge admirer of Ballard. Most of his best work is in the short stories, not the novels. Just my opinion. Hello America was pretty good. Cocaine Nights is cocaine-driven prose.
Back on topic — is there any football anywhere this summer? No? Guess I'll concentrate on the cricket and F1 then.

Non-league pre-season matches start around the beginning of July. So there's that.

There's also this (some of the Ballard purists have got a bit sniffy about it but I enjoyed it):

Apologies for going off topic. Won't digress again.

Without him it would be nothing more than a bit of email and file transfers between universities and the military.

Whatever you think of Putin he certainly put on a great World Cup in Russia. There was never going to be any trouble there.
