World Cup 2026

A lot of talk about how USA isn't the right place to hold it but Mexico may not go swimmingly either

I've got a few friends from Mexico and they tell me the public are planning protests around the world cup because they're fed up with the government. They said "it might get ugly".

Could be a shitshow everywhere!

First World Cup I remember that and outside of England not qualifying, Ray Houghton worldie against Italy, the Brazilian baby celebration, Baggio missing and some poor Colombian being shot dead after his own goal, not a lot really happened
Well for me, as an exiled Paddy, it was great. As you mentioned. Houghton's worldie, and my first and only WC match in the old Giants Stadium in NJ against Norway. I have never seen so many Paddies in one place. An absolutely dreadful match - finished 0-0 which was enough to ensure Ireland's qualification to the next round. So huge celebrations. One abiding memory was a mass photograph outside the stadium consisting of a bunch of drunken Irishmen, NY and New Jersey Cops and a bunch of highly inebriated Norwegians in Viking helmets and wearing skis. All having a great old time. As I did. Brilliant memories.

Biggest regret; getting a ticket to Argentina Vs Greece at Sullivan Stadium (now Gillette - or should I say Boston Stadium) which turned out to be Maradona's last ever international match, where he scored and did a full rant into a TV camera. Well he was on the old Colombian marching powder and they caught him. Argentina would have won that tournament too. And I could not go.

The final was pretty awful but that WC was great as far as I was concerned.

Not sure about this one however...we'll see how it goes...either way, I will take my son to a match even with these awful ticket prices, just for the experience.

Football has changed, you have to have a bit of loose wealth to attend games now, it'll be mostly America versions of teams fans that attend anyway. Money has taken over and we can't be surprised that it has.

Maybe football fans should just stop going?
They slowly are pal, certainly in domestic games, real fans are binning the CL, picking and choosing due to cost, I didn’t do Carabou final and semi final fa cup, to be able to afford the FA cup final. Young fans aren’t coming through like they used to and I reckon within the next 20 years local fans will be few and far between.

Total Sheep….’erm….France’

There have been eight world cups held in the Americas. Only once have a european country won it. Last time it was baking hot in Brazil in 2014 the european teams all did shite.

My goodness, I hope other countries treat US teams as they've been treated in other competitions. I don't care what sport it is.

I hope they are stopped, denied staff participations, are patted down and humiliated with cavity searches.

The world HAS to teach the US gov something and it's not about "being the bigger person" as the US will learn nothing but continue to assume they are untouchable.

I have no interest in the WC and im surprised fans actually want to go to this rogue country. A country that starts an illegal war should not be holding the WC.

Countries should be boycotting the WC.

Which country will be the first to have fans shot dead by the Americans ?

Fans? Are the players safe?

I agree. 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98 were all far better.

Having said that, there was a superb moment when the highly-fancied Colombians farted around with the ball for ages, Romania nicked it off them and Hagi scored an incredible goal. Definitely one of my favourite World Cop moments.

Totally agree about those other tournaments being better.

Main thing I vaguely remember is the dry pitches that weren't really made for football,, and the ball not rolling all that well. They really needed watering - as did the players, the heat didn't help.

Same stuff likely this time. Plus more human issues too.

However this World Cup pans out, one thing that is blatantly obvious is that FIFA do not give one single fuck about the players or the ordinary fans.
A statement that could have been written at any time during the past 30 odd years as tournaments and qualification processes were extended.

Yes.

There's a workers' strike tomorrow. By staff and other officials at the venue over the breach of a legally binding agreement over Commercial rights, including vendors outside who sell at the stadium. Access to seats that have been revoked to appease FIFA.

My understanding is that some of the stadium refurbishments were paid for by investors. who were allowed to use areas they had specifically leased, which included seats/boxes/refreshment areas where the contract stated they could be used for all stadium events, including any future World Cups.
