Overall, that was a better team, I concede your point. Not, I think, far better. The game against Brazil was terrific, one of the best I've ever seen an England team play. Problem is, that team had a crummy second-string keeper, as we found out to our cost in that quarter final.

Let's face it. We're fucking shite and will remain fucking shite for some time.

We've been close to shite since 66. That's the awful truth, and I don't pretend to understand it. There's been a number of World Cups since then which we didn't even qualify for. Can you for one second imagine that happening to Germany? Or Italy? In those we did, it's simple, we didn't have a sniff. Possible exception for 1990, when we did actually get to the semis, and should have won that match. That's it. That is the sum total of what we have to show since in the last half-century. Never won the Euro, and the WC decades back, when it was on our turf. For a country that's mad about football, that invented the fucking game, it just can't be explained.

England were a far better team in 1970 than 1966. They should have won the WC in Mexico but it all went tits up. It's been downhill since 1970.

don't agree i think the italia 90 was one of the best world cups there has ever been and we were a decent team. i think that team was better than the 66 squad

Thought it was only GD in case of 3 way tie - that can´t happen now so having beat both the others surely CR automatically win the group on head to head regardless of the result?

The ranking of teams in each group is based on:

Points in all group matches, with 3 points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.
Goal difference in all group matches
Goals scored in all group matches
Points in matches between tied teams
Goal difference in matches between tied teams
Goals scored in matches between tied teams
Drawing of lots

Interesting, so they changed it.

But to be honest it's good change. It's stupid to use matches between teams in 3 rounds groups, last round was too boring many times because teams didn't have lot to play for after qualifying on head vs head matches after 2 games.

I think the World Cup has always followed that format.

The only things that have changed, with regards to advancement, are the amount of points awarded and needed to advance;

FIFA World Cup 1930–1990
2 points for a win
1-point for a draw
5 points for automatic advancement to knockout phase
1-point minimum required for possible advancement to knockout phase

FIFA World Cup 1994–present
3 points for a win
1-point for a draw
7 points for automatic advancement to knockout phase
2 points minimum required for possible advancement to knockout phase

Under "History of the World Cup" this is listed under "Criteria for Advancement to Knockout Phase"

Greatest number of points in group matches
Greatest total goal difference in the three group matches
Greatest number of goals scored in the three group matches
If teams remained level after those criteria, a mini-group would be formed from those teams, who would be ranked on:
Most points earned in matches against other teams in the tie
Greatest goal difference in matches against other teams in the tie
Greatest number of goals scored in matches against other teams in the tie
If teams remained level after all these criteria, FIFA would hold a drawing of lots
The drawing of lots for tied teams takes place one hour after the final game in the group at the stadium where the championship match is held. The drawing of lots is similar to the World Cup Draw in terms of style and format; a ball is drawn from a pot, which contains balls with the names of each tied team.

It can, and has gone (I think) to head-to-head record, it's just not the first tie breaker procedure.
