Barca did win a trophy this year.

Also, show me a midfielder who beats the achievement of 60 goals and 14 assists in one season and then I might be able to judge whether or not he could win it this year.

Not including the fact Messi broke the record goals total in a calendar year as well, that won't be forgotten.

Xavi did every year. He meant you could not get the ball and Barca had at least 50% of the possession in dangerous areas in your half.

Bayern Munich players were sensible, not self absorbed and allowed themselves to be rested to win the big games when it mattered. Funny how Messi keeps scoring more and more goals, but Barcelona are becoming less and less successful.

Now if you were talking about ''team'' of the year, then yes; Bayern would probably win it. But, is any individual Bayern player better than Messi? No.
I agree no Bayern player individually is better than Messi, but did Bayern players have better seasons? Yes.
It's not the season of the year award.

It goes to the best player, that's Messi.

It goes to the best player that SEASON. Part of being the best player is leading your team to victories in the biggest games. Barcelona lost or drew every big game they had this year with the exception of Milan at the Nou Camp where Messi was sensational.

Lost or drew all their big games except for one Champions League game?

A league title is even more impressive then.

What big games did Gareth Bale help Spurs win to secure them 5th place and the Europa League next season? Yet he deserved player of the season over here.

I don't think Bale deserved player of the Year and he did help them beat United. I would have given it to RVP and if RVP was British then no doubt he would have won it.

You can win a league title easily without winning the big games. United pretty much did it in 010/011 I think where there form against the other big teams were poor.

If you beat all the lower teams in the league consistently then you are going to win your domestic league.

The biggest games were the ones against Madrid. They lost in the cup, drew once in the league and lost the other. They lost the super cup too. They were thrashed by Bayern and only managed to draw twice with PSG. Lost to Milan away as well.

Zaha got the Championships POTY before the play offs, so Palace had won fuck all at that point.

And no offence, but the fact you were in the play offs must have meant you hadn't won many of the big games beforehand?

POTY recognizes individual talent and success, and no one matched the levels of Messi surprisingly enough.

Together Bayern have a brilliant squad, individually none of them match what Messi did this season. Hence, he will win it.

No offense, but do you have any idea about our season? It does not look like it at all. We beat Cardiff, Hull, Leicester, Middlesborough, Bolton and Brighton. The only team we did not beat was Watford.

Except those players individually were more in several of the bigger games. We will not agree on this and in the end the award will go to a big name, rather than the guy, who deserves it.

So you lost and drew against the lesser teams then? Don't know what's worse.

And you say the guy who deserves it...

Who is that player in your opinion.

We had a poor start, because as you being a City fan should know, we did our business too late and then we had a shocking end to the season.

I would give it to Lahm or Ribery, because they have consistently played at a high level through out the season with no dips.

If Messi stopped playing football for a year, it will still go to Messi.

Messi is undoubtfully the best player in the world. But the ballon d'or should go to the best player of the year. A player who had a major impact on his teams performance and success. Like Snejider in 2010.
But this year I can not name one player who has been one step ahead other players...
Therefore Messi will win it. Ok.

But I'm looking forward to the 'Team of the year'. Bayern and Dortmund were the best teams this season and hammered the rest... So normally it should be a mix of these two teams.

I kind of have to agree with pudge. He makes some good arguments to be honest. Before reading his comments I would have said that Messi winning it would have been a joke. Bayern players were amazing this year and I'd love for one of them to win it, but like pudge said, none of them stand out individually like Messi does. I still think Mullet has some chance though!
