World Player of the Year must go to a Bayern Muncih Player?

You can't stop giving the award to Messi because you're bored of giving it to Messi. If he's been the best player this year then he deserves it.

My only qualm is that with any player awards, they're always goal centric. If Lahm has been every bit as good a defender as Messi has been an attacker it wouldn't matter a jot, because if he isn't putting the ball in the net, people seldom care. Xavi almost certainly should have won it at least once.

Messi is the best player in the world and has performed, when fit, and sometimes when he's been 50% fit, at a level beyond what any Bayern player can only dream of.

One game recently (think it was Bilbao) Messi came on as a sub and was limping, on his first touch he created a chance, two minutes later he scored a great goal and then created a goal. The guy is better than everyone else in the world. He's scored 60+ goals again this season.

The guy is amazing and we should be embracing and enjoying every second of watching him. We are lucky to be living and seeing the man. München are a great team with some great individuals and they'll fully deserve their treble and all the plaudits for getting there (if they win this weekend against Stutgart). But Messi is a football God. A sporting God.

-- Wed May 29, 2013 8:59 pm --

It goes to the best player that SEASON. Part of being the best player is leading your team to victories in the biggest games. Barcelona lost or drew every big game they had this year with the exception of Milan at the Nou Camp where Messi was sensational.
Lost or drew all their big games except for one Champions League game?

A league title is even more impressive then.

What big games did Gareth Bale help Spurs win to secure them 5th place and the Europa League next season? Yet he deserved player of the season over here.

I don't think Bale deserved player of the Year and he did help them beat United. I would have given it to RVP and if RVP was British then no doubt he would have won it.

You can win a league title easily without winning the big games. United pretty much did it in 010/011 I think where there form against the other big teams were poor.

If you beat all the lower teams in the league consistently then you are going to win your domestic league.

The biggest games were the ones against Madrid. They lost in the cup, drew once in the league and lost the other. They lost the super cup too. They were thrashed by Bayern and only managed to draw twice with PSG. Lost to Milan away as well.
This season van Persie was 15 minutes away from equalling Torres' long draught without a goal for Chelsea the other year.

Messi is the obvious choice. No one other than Ronaldo comes close.

I'm not surprised that German football is looking for more accolades.

No that's fuckin ridiculous he just won the last award for achieving that feat so u think that feat is worth 2 balloon d'ors? No fuck that comments like that is why the system is designed to give it to messi regardless
The 'system' is designed to give the award to the best player in the world that season. Which is Messi.

Until someone comes along and matches Messi's goal record and wins trophies doing it or Messi's level drops and Barca stop winning trophies, nobody else will win it.

It definitely should go to Messi even though Bayern had a very good season.
