I agree on the notion that players should earn whatever they can get, anyone in their place would do the same. It's business and if the employer is willing to pay you big money to get your services, why not? Professional athletes have a very small window of opportunity during which they can make the most money, once they finish their playing careers they're not likely to reach the same financial highs ever again, so it's understandable that they want to make as much money as possible, while they can.
What I fail to understand though is, how City plan to sustain this model in the future. Yes, it's very likely that with the quality already assembled and others on the way your club will get in the CL in the near future, probably as early as this upcoming season and the first trophies may start to arrive quite soon, too. But speaking from the personal experience as a CFC fan I could definitely see the ridiculous wages and astronomical transfer fees being a serious obstacle in City's quest for domestic and European dominance.
The huge disparity in wages among the various members of the squad will lead to constant pay raise demands from those who will feel slighted and you better believe that the minute the likes of Adebayor,Yaya Toure or Silva start to struggle their teammates who earn a fraction of the big stars' wages will make their displeasure known, which doesn't exactly help the team spirit. Plus, like it had happened before to the certain Chelsea imports, if they don't settle well or feel that English weather or football style isn't much to their liking it's difficult to move them since not many other clubs are eager to match their salaries even when they are coming on loan, and in case of a sale you're not likely to recoup anywhere near what you'd originally spent since you considerably overpaid in the first place.
With UEFA introducing their new financial rules system it will be much harder, if not impossible at all for City to continue their big spending and not get in trouble.
