Worst pubs you have ever frequented...

Went to college in the mid 80's in Openshaw at the College set back from Ashton Old Road

Our 'faves' were The Grey Mare - now buried under Alan Turing Way/Pottery Lane junction
full of old men asleep over their Chesters Bitter

After we were barred for blocking the pool table pockets with beermats we upgraded to the The Leigh Arms (up Ashton Old Road a bit away from town) - another dive, but still there.

We also went in some old crypt of a shit hole on the south side of Ashton Old Road about 100 yards into town from the Grey Mare facing the deck access flats - I know not its name but it truly was horrendous.

I used to live behind the Malt Shovels - it was ALWAYS a shit hold but amazingly is still open
And The Star was my favoured boozer in Cheadle - played for the Darts Team back in the 80's - it was most definitely an acquired taste :-)

Worst night in a pub was when some crazy woman tried to throw a big heavy wooden pub chair at me from across the room. Luckily a guy grabbed it in time

Bloody hell, I've just remembered, The Hollywood at the back of Edgeley....dear god that was full of Helly Hansen clad pill heads bouncing about and gurning their faces to smithereens. A true horror story of a pub. It even had revolving front doors.

*shudders*

I'm just going to add Glossop as a whole. One that sticks out was The Beehive. Thankfully i was in there with a bloke I know who was a local, so they only stared at me for the first 2 hours.

The Royal Oak in Edgeley, at the end of the precinct, is the same. My ex's dad used to live opposite William Hill and we went in there one night (his local) and as I walked in I'm pretty sure everyone is was staring and the barmaid even stop pouring a pint halfway through.

The music may even have turned off.

I have to stick up for the Royal Oak. A bunch of us used to go in there every year for the opening day of The Cheltenham Festival. None of us used to step foot in the place for the rest of the year but they would be expecting us like old lost friends every year.

We walked in one year and some old guy was sat at "our" table and the woman told him to shift as " the racing lads always sit there." The poor old **** probably went in there seven days a week and got shifted for a bunch of once a yearers.

Yep, nowt wrong with The Royal Oak. Decent boozer

Remember Linda the barmaid?

She still works there, proper MILF and nearly 60 now i reckon.

This is one of the best threads that's been on here for a good while!
Keep um coming blues!!!!

Was talking to the lads at work the other day about pubs shutting on a Sunday for a few hours....think it was 3pm (last-orders), chucked out at 4pm...then back open for 7pm???
Unless of course you was drinking in one of the rough-arse pubs mentioned, and you got a cheeky lock-in : )

Vaguely - its been a long time...

A bit of googling has I think lead me to the name of the shit hole pub on Ashton Old Road opposite the Deck Access Flats - was it the Mitchell Arms - between Mitchell Street and Ensign Street?

Cobdens in Stockport reminds me of the Bar in Star Wars.

You should have seen it when it was the MA top pub

Best juke box ever. Saw a few landlords pass by in there. Often raided by the police on a Friday night. Did you ever get in the Oddfellows?

Once Sky started showing sunday games my local the Royal Oak in Cheadle never shut. The door was, a pot whent round to pay the barmaid and we all stayed to watch the game :)

TheOak never really shut anytime mind. We used to run a minibus to City away games. I had the keys to open up for the lads to meet. One morning we arranger 5-30am meet for Southampton away, i got there about 5-15 to open up and the Karaoke was still in full swing with about 40 people in there. :)

It was next door but one to the police station too, but the landlord always made sure the CID lads got a late drink on a Sunday night.
