I used to think Stockport has had its fair share of dives over the years including Manchester Arms ( now Cobdens ), Tom Thumb ( near the Viaduct ), Blue Waterfall ( Petersgate ), Wembley ( Adswood ), Cheshire Cat ( Brinnington ), most on Castle Street ( Edgeley ) and The Nicholsons ( Lancashire Hill ).....but they were posh compared to those I've visited in some rougher parts of Gorton, Levenshulme and Ancoats....and those were pleasant compared to a few I've been in around Glasgow....and then I went in a couple of pubs in Rhyll.....and thought they were the pits until one mad works do in Blackpool....forget the pubs name but it made the pub in Boys from the Blackstuff look like a 5 star hotels bar.
Had to walk in dodging punches from the numerous stag do's scrapping outside. Managed to avoid the buckets of water being thrown over the floor swilling away blood and vomit. Blokes were openly pissing where they stood. Women in your face threatening to rip yer face off. Had to step over numerous bodies on the floor to get to the bar. A tourettes singer on a microphone. No change given at the bar no matter what change you were owed. Couldn't put your pint down cos the nearest pisshead would pick it up and stare you out with "what you doing nicking me pint" followed quickly with "so what are you going to do about it then?!" Most of the blokes had lost their minds and the sleeves off their shirts. A bloke asked me if I'd found his tooth. Then it just got wierder and wierder. I was glad to get back to the Stockport 'dives' after that!
