Worst World Cup ever? [Merged]

Pmsl. Kiam is the best International football fan ever, as well as the best City fan ever.

Well I have been supporting football for over three decades and I'm not happy.

Football is also an entertainment business and the games have been dull. One-paced, no urgency, no attacking flair, with shocking ball control and distribution.

The only World Cup that has come close to this for tedium is the 1990 one in Italy.

The myth that the tournament gets better baffles me too. In Germany, the group stages had some great football before the tournament plunged into mediocrity.

The fear of losing only gets greater in the knock-out stages, not lesser.

At the end of the day, the fear factor is ruining the game and countries seem happier to chance their luck on lucky points, goal difference and (ultimately) penalties. No-one seems to actively want to go out and win the game by being the best footballing side.

I thought the European championships from a couple of years ago was the best tournament I've seen, although the final was a bit of a damp squib.
It seemed to have more open attacking play than I'd seen before in international football, added to the fact that England didn't qualify, so I just watched the football and wasn't subjected to any media overdose

I agree, the games so far haven't been the best. But the main annoyance in the world cup for me is the vuvzelas, what ever they're called. I know it's a custom in african football and i know it's there country but it doesn't make an atmosphere and give encouragement to players...it's just bloody noise!! They should ban them imo.

Agree with this to an extent. First round games are often cagey affairs. Both Portugal & Ivory Coast knew it was curtains if they lost yesterday. It'll get better as the tournament goes on.

Happens every World Cup. It's all about getting to the knock out stages, so no one really cares about how it looks. England fans are not going to see a decent game (that involves England) until the quarters when they may face one of the decent teams. My favourite world cup was 1978, as everything after that seemed to be just not as good!

Every team has played and so far it has been a really poor week of football. I've not been entertained at all!

The vuvu-hell-as have completely ruined any atmosphere, emotion and passion from the crowds as they just make the whole 90minutes of every single game a monotone, droany, annoying borefest; there have been a fair few empty seats; there's been a lot of poor play; there have been many poor players; even so called good players have been poor; there have been few goals; there have been no spectacular goals; there has been a really negative feel to it all with most teams packing the midfield and sitting back making it hard for the opposition and, just like the Champions Lg last season, they are not entertaining tactics; the ball is shit; the altitude is making the ball worse; Robert Greens mistake; Shaun Wright-Phillips performance; Jamie fuckin Carragher; and it is the worst Brazil side in their history, which just about tops it all off for me! Did I mention there's no atmosphere!?
Absolutley shit so far!

The only positive is that everyone has left themselves a lot to do and that puts more emphasis on teams having to go and win their other group games which might make it all more entertaining!

But we still won't be able to hear the Samba atmosphere from Brazilians; the loud passion and constant singing and jumping from the Eastern Europeans; the brass bands of England and Holland; the well co-ordinated noise and singing of the Oriental nations; the colourful, tuneful singing from the other African nations etc, because of these fuckin vuvu's! Even if the quality of this tournament hots up we won't get any sense if it from the crowds cos of these fucking ridiculous horns!

-- Wed Jun 16, 2010 5:35 pm --

It's not an African tradition! I work with a Zimbabwean and a Mozambeque and both if them hate the fuckin things and want rid! I listened to Five Live the other day and there was a Ghanaen on the phone saying that never have the vuvu's been a part of their football! It's just a South African thing; and it's AWFUL!!!

It has been very disappointing so far. Hopefully now all the first games have been played the teams involved now have to 'go for it' to an extent. It has been very cautious so far with not a lot to get excited about. I can see that changing as of tonight when SA kick off against Uruguay.

Today's games have been very good.

going to be fascinating to see who gets out of Spain, and Brazil's group

The opening games are often dull as both teams don't want to lose. But by the 3rd game, one team has to win to go through so it will improve

I hope South Africa go through. It's been uplifting to see the joy and happiness that football brings to people's lives. Some people complain that money is better spent on electricity and hospitals etc, but hope and memories feed the mind.
