Would Kinkladze get into this side?

Closest player to Kinkladze these days is Messi and wouldn’t we all love to see him playing for City.

Messi invented the ‘false’ No 9 role. He doesn’t track back and walks around much of the time.

Give him the ball though and he is electric. Can take any player on 1 for 1 and shoot from anywhere – as did Kinkladze.

I’d have loved to have seen Kinkladze in this role, which didn’t exist in the 90’s and feel he’d fit perfectly into such a position at City now.

Great post,I agree, would love to have been able to see him in this team in his prime when he first joined us.

-- Wed Jan 15, 2014 3:45 pm --

No mention of Maurizio Gaudino. Twice the player Silva is and could do you a nice deal on a luxury sports car to boot!
Nice tan. Nice hair. What more could you ask for?

I will carry his post match on the pitch v Liverpool to the grave,he could play a crowd Maurizio, great player.

actually the false no.9 was invented in the 50s, by a club called Manchester City.
think they're referring to style of play Proelia.

Probably because for style of play he is the closest example. Nobody is saying he is as good as Messi, would score 60 goals a season, but for style of player he is a good reference point. At the time, for style, he was often compared to Maradona and If memory serves me correct by the man himself after he went on loan to Argentina.

As the poster said the 4-3-2-1, interchanging of positions between the supporting three, false number nine were not in vogue at the time so it was difficult to get the best out of his undoubted talent. I think at the back end of Frank Clarks first season he played behind the striker, (Oxford Away) but had little in the way of support consistently.

And someone who says Messi doesn't track back and walks around most of the time!

Not only is Messi phenomenal on the ball, he's the ultimate team player too.

Gio was a similar style of player to Messi though.

Of course it's a yes. Whether he would have stayed in it would be down to how brilliant h could be on his own or how well he integrated into the team plans/style.

He'd have to be prepared to work.

Loved watching him, but we were in a different place then; having talent was enough for us. I think his skills would still enable him to make an impact now, and I can see the 'poor man's' Messi comparison. But to play in successful teams you also need consistent application - even Nasri now works his bollocks off for City!

Still one of my all time favourites though.

Posters saying he's work rate was poor? He played in a team that had 9 outfield water carriers, he was there to create and score not chase about like another headless chicken or be a clogger. I'm sure in today's team he would no doubt put a "shift in" Pearcey style.

No thanks. The midfield 4 we have now are a fantastic unit, and replacing any of them for Kinkladze at his peak is risking disturbing the balance in there at the moment. Odd how Kinkladze didn't really set the world alight anywhere else he played; he was a diamond in a sea of shite when he played for us, but virtually sank without trace once he left us. Not sure you could say the same fate would befall any of Yaya, Merlin, Samir or Fern. Those 4 feed off each other. Apologies in advance to any of the legions of Gio fans on here; it's only my opinion. Peace, love and bells.
