I think the original tomb raider was a definite wow moment for me.
In terms of football games I think France 98 really stepped the game up and then in more recent years FIFA 09 raised the bar when pro evo was the better game before that.

there's a scene in the latest GTA V where you're off your face floating through the clouds in free fall towards the city for about 5 mins with a great tune playing in the back ground

there are some real jaw dropping scenes and transcripts in GTA V and i'm only 30% into the game
