Yaya Toure - 2016/17 performances

The only thing I would argue there is, without him that performance wouldn't happen. It was happening frequently with Fernandinho at the start of the season.

Currently he deserves an extension. If he's working hard and has abandonded or rather we've disbanded his clique I'd have him for another season.

As you say, Clichy, Zaba, Willy, Navas all look to be on their way out. There's a decent chance Delph & Fernando will follow too.
They will surely be replaced by younger players.

Toure's current form offers the opportuntity to rotate with Fernandinho, interchange with Fernandinho and even rest Silva & De Bruyne a little more against the cloggers.
Both Toure & Fernandnho have shown qualities in the more advanced role and defensively.
Fernadinho could also be deployed elsewhere. He's always looked excellent at centre half inhis limited minutes there.

He is much better than Fernandinho at the base of midfield when we have the ball. Fernandinho for all his quality simply can't do what Yaya does when it comes to possession - making himself available constantly, beating a pressing defender or two, popping the ball off to someone in space and moving the ball forwards. His passing range was integral to it as well, as a number of the through balls which really got at Spurs were early balls from him - with Fernandinho we have to get it to Silva or De Bruyne and it slows it down.

I love Fern, he's our best defensive player by a mile, but Yaya is just different class with the ball.

I'd like to see the team from Saturday with Fernandinho in the hybrid RB/CM role Zabaleta had.

Slash his wages in half and see if he still wants to play football in Europe.

Is that because he is half as good as he was. ?

It is time for him to move on.

I will await his quotes when he leaves.

It's not a case of being half as good as he was, which in any case he probably is.

He would not get anywhere near the wage he is on now, anywhere else in the world other than China (which he has ruled out).

If he does love football that much, sign a 1 year extension for £50k per week.

Let's see how much he loves it then.

Agreed his passing being much more incisive and him being excellent in tight spaces.
Wasn't disagreeing that, just saying we were also excellent with Fernandinho in that role.

I agree, I think that xi but with Fernandinho right and Zabaleta/Delph left would be very interesting.

Hey. I'm agreeing with you. The love football thing is just shallow posturing.
His mate, Seluk will be pulling all the strings.
Seluk still maintains he is the best midfielder in the world and it seems some agree with him.

It's a trade off between the two.

Personally, I think Fernandinho would have blocked the passing lane on the edge of the box for Spur's second. Kolarov should have been the one to do it, not Yaya, but Fernandinho often compensates in those situations.

On the flip side, our performance would have been totally different without Yaya and I doubt we would have dominated in the same way if we swapped the two. If he wasn't suspended, of course.

That's sort of what I was inferring though. We were dominating just like that at the start of the season with Fernandinho in that role.

Not sure there's a deep midfielder in World football I'd swap an inform YaYa for though.

I think we could see YaYa sat deep and Fernandinho at centre half and the two dovetailing, that would be excellent to see and both are intelligent enough to do it.
Under the cosh, YaYa drops in and Fernandinho pushes or closes the gaps. Then revert again when we regain possession.

With YaYa in form, there's all sorts of possibilities.
But we need to stick with the 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 that we deployed Saturday and for the first 10 games.

The best thing that has happened for Yaya this season is Fern's ill-discipline and Gundo's injury. Without both of those, I don't think he be enjoying this renaissance, and he'd be snapping China's hand off.

Leaders do not put 2 stone in weight on.
Leaders do not go missing for 6 months.
Leaders do not give end of the week contract demands

Leaders do not just start using the media when it suits them.
Thank you, good post.

I think Dihno is in fact the perfect RB for Pep's system. I mean, age permitting and all. I know I'm one of the few ageist here, and I really would not be offering new contracts to anyone over 30.

Not Yaya, not Dihno, not Silva. Not because I don't want them, but more because I don't want to view them as starters. Guys in their 30's are bad investments. At best, they should all be transitioning into backup roles. And if you don't have a player who can beat them out yet, then you know where your weaknesses lie.

Silva, and Dihno have an extra year left on their contracts I believe. So I'll keep both while actively looking for who'd supplant them as starters. I think Gundogan will supplant Silva as the 2nd 8. And the 3 (Gundogan, Kev and Silva) will rotate starting as the 2 #8s with Silva having fewer starts than the other 2.

Yaya, I'd let go at season's end. Sadly we wouldn't. I'm one od his biggest fans, but I'm also a realist. Next season Pogba will be demonstrably better than Yaya, time we find the next powerhouse.

Dihno, I'll let him play out his contract and let Garcia and whoever replaces Yaya be the 2 at the base of the triangle.

Do not get emotional with these decisions.
