The thing about Yaya is that whilst he was capable of winning games single handedly, to my mind for every 9/10 or 10/10 game there would be two or three where he was a 5 or 6/10. Whether that was because he was played when he was carrying injuries, whether sometimes the opposition set up in a way that nullified him, whether sometimes he just couldn’t be fucked, whatever the reason was, I’d agree with the general sentiment that Yaya hit heights Merlin never managed, but then again Merlin would be the one you could rely on for turning in 8/10 performances week in week out.
Both of them are amongst the finest players I have ever seen play the game at all, never mind play for City, and I consider myself and my kids fortunate to have seen two of the games true greats playing week in week out.
Since this is Yaya’s thread, here are my Yaya favourite moments:
- the goal agains the rags in the semi final at Wembley. Once we went ahead I didn’t think we would lose, and a goal from us started looking more likely for about the last 10 minutes of the first half.
- the goal against Stoke in the final. The significance of that goal can’t be overstated, but in itself the goal was a thing of beauty for the incredible power in the shot. No keeper was saving that.
- the goals against Newcastle the last game before QPR, without which we wouldn’t have won the league
- that goal against Villa in the 13/14 season. Graeme Souness described it as being like a big kid playing football with a load of little kids in the playground, which as descriptions go can’t be bettered.
- rolling in that penalty against the dippers to win the League Cup under Pellegrini. The last time he had a decisive influence on us winning a trophy.
