Against Madrid he was coming back from injury toward the end of a long hard season. That wasn't a game for Yaya to start imo, but I can understand Pellegrini doing so in the circumstances with the benefit of having seen him in training, but 10 minutes in it was blatantly obvious Yaya wasn't fit enough to start but yet we persisted.
After 30 minutes we were crying out for a change, but I doubt Manuel is the type of manager who would risk upsetting a player for the good of the team, in fact I know this as he said he would rather lose a final than break his word to a player and that would probably extend to upsetting players too.
The obvious move for me would have been to bring on Sterling for Yaya and push KDB inside. Any fan who knows our team could have made that call, but Manuel rinsed out an already pedestrian Yaya further before making that change. Again I don't blame an obviously unfit Yaya, at his age he should be treated like Juve treated Pirlo in the twilight of his career.
They managed to prolong his top level playing career by 4 years by protecting him with additional legs around him to do his running whilst Pirlo was then left to do what he does best. That is how you manage ageing special talents not by rinsing them out in a midfield two in the most physically demanding league in the world.
