Yaya's Goal - Was It Really "Out Of Nowhere"?

i just replied with - well if it was cleverley, or welbeck, then i could see how you would think that, as they havn't got the ability to even think about shooting from there, but this fella is out of this world, thats the difference

I believe it was a plan that went wrong.

I distinctly heard Silva shout "On me 'ead son" in a Canarian accent as Yaya lined up the kick. Yaya then wastefully lashed it high and wide. Luckily, the elements were on our side and the wind swept the ball into the net.

Nasri's was a mishit swipe too, btw.

Yaya uses that body shape to bend the ball into the top corner from free kicks. It was supposed to happen from the free kick but the plan went to shit, then he found himself in exactly the same position shortly afterwards, so had a go then instead.

Practicing a skill does actually work & even great players can improve & perfect stuff if they work at it.

Fantastic.

And don't forget Navas's shot. Lucky to get away with that. Mannone very unlucky to get only half a glove on it!

I dont think the OP is trying to say that every touch from the free-kick was planned.

The initial free-kick set piece fell apart due to a bad lay off by Silva and Sunderland chasing the ball out. But Yaya held his position hoping to get another chance. He asked for the ball back from Zabba and he pinged it first time.

Theres no doubt it was a shot. That was exactly the position he wa hoping to shoot from in the first instance.

Well played Yaya. Technically brilliant and extremely intelligent play.

^^^THIS^^^

When I wrote the original post I was worried some people would take my thoughts to mean that the entire sequence of play was "scripted". Not at all. However, once the ball was back in our possession after a little sloppy play, Yaya called for the ball, purposely moved to the same spot he had been for the free kick and drilled it. You can watch him shade himself back over a few yards and angle his body for the shot.

As much as anything, my thoughts were a response to Tyler and Neville criticizing the free kick and saying we had blown it. Maybe so, but (in my opinion) we managed to get the ball back and re-set ourselves for another go from the same space. That is not INDIVIDUAL BRILLIANCE. That is team football.

It's all just fun to debate detail, fellow Blues. Just a little something I noticed when re-watching that sequence of play.

I agree.

Biggest give away is the angle Yaya approached the ball from to hit it...its exactly the same as his free kicks....ie. the shot goes 90 degrees from the angle of his run up...

if none of the rest of the lead up play was planned the final execution definately was....nailed on
