Your Favourite Classical Music Pieces

Can’t believe this bastardization of Handel’s “Zadok the Priest” hasn’t been posted and hailed as the most beloved of all classical music.

Not only is it the glorious, much loved, anthem for The Champions League, it is based on Handel’s Coronation Anthem, used for the British monarchy since the early 1700s!

It’s a Bluemoon TWOFER!!

Nurse, get the sick bag…
And what an arse licker he was, when all's said and done. Mind you, German immigrant trying to make his way. I am fond of the Water Music, and the Music for the Royal Fireworks. There are millions of versions, but it's best on period instruments. Hervé Niquet's version on Harmonia Mundi is my favourite.

And à propos of nothing in particular. I've spent quite a lot of my time, when listening to classical music, listening to pianists. Since the rest of the world seems to bow down before him, let me take this opportunity to say that I can't stand Glenn Gould, most of the time. It's all about him! Never about the composer. He is the Cristiano Ronaldo of concert pianists.

Ive always loved this. English composer Edward Elgars "Nimrod" ......You will probably know it, its 4 minutes long.
Its part of his Enigma Variations.
Each variation was written to describe his friends musically. Nimrod is a fabled biblical hunter, which Elgar thought described the personality of A Jaeger, one of his best friends.

Its called "Enigma" because Elgar said every movement was based on a much more famous melody, up to date no-one has definitively worked out what.

Sounds particularly good on headphones.

Enigma Variations and that piece particularly are always played at the last night of the Proms, I think. That's a long tradition.

Usually got to be one of almost anything by Beethoven ,but recently 'discovered ' Wagneŕs Funeral March from Gotterdamerung. It's only about six or seven minutes long because, as someone said Wagner has sublime 15minutes but interminal three hours.

This year's proms have already had a performance of the four seasons but much more interestingly, later in the season (6th Sept I think) is Max Richter's recomposition of that work. It's pretty well known but if you're not familiar and you are good with a minimalist informed approach then it's well worth your time.
