Your thoughts on Alex Ferguson as a manager

is that so mr drillbit, just shows how fukin shit our managers were around that time. to be fair you have broke the transfer record a few times since and spent over the odds for the verons and jones's of this world and it could be levelled that you have bought the league once or twice! by the way, whens the next anti-glazer march planned for or do they only happen when the team isnt top??

People tend to forget that he'd enjoyed extraordinary success, at least comparatively, in Paisley long before he went to Aberdeen. He took St Mirren up two divisions by building a young team, many of whom went on to play at the highest levels. It makes the hypothetical arguments around how he might do with no money and a mediocre team redundant.

A true test of a manager is winning something with very little financial spend. Spend money and you are likely to win something as did Blackburn in the Jack Walker era. Clough spent little and won 2 European Cups in something like 3 attempts.

Perhaps Ferguson's best achievements were at Aberdeen.

At United in his early years he did little and then he had to start spending, going to Norwich to buy their best player Bruce, then Boro and Pallister, Webb from Forest etc etc in my view he bought himself out of trouble. He was also very lucky in that Eric Harrison delivered to him on a plate in the early 90's the Nevilles's, Butt, Scholes,Giggs, Beckham etc. All of these became internationals and some served him for the next 20 years, no other manager in the history of the game has had such an array of talent delivered to them.

Whilst City would also spend a lot of cash, it would be spread around a group of players whereas United would spend big often on one player. Remember it was nearly 10 years ago when they spent £30 million on Ferdinand, they also went close to £30 million on Veron, Rooney and Berbatov. No one in the game has spent as much as Fergie and if you spend enough then you will almost eventually get success.

A good manager no doubt, although he has been very fortunate in the way things have panned out and the financial resources he has had available to him.

Interesting post from a United forum with regards to some of your claims that Fergie bought the title, outspent everyone etc....

This is the biggest myth of them all and a myth that any city fan will argue until they are blue in the face and any red would agree with them just to make them happy.

Yes we have invested large sums of money in individual players but this individuals tend to serve our club for many many years.

Take Roy Keane for example. In the Summer of 1993, Ferguson spent 3.75 million on Keane and £100,000 on Tomlinson. We sold off a number of players and recouped £1 million quid. In the same summer, City purchased the following...

Nicky Summerbee £1,500,000
Peter Beagrie £1,100,000
Paul Walsh £750,000
Uwe Rosler £750,000
David Rocastle £2,000,000
Carl Griffiths £500,000
Alan Kernaghan £1,600,000

That little lot cost £8.2 million quid. They could have bought 2 Roy Keanes and had change to buy Eric Cantona.

And just a little ditty about Fergies first ten years which city fans always say that was the time when Fergie spent big.....

Manchester United "bought" three league titles, three FA Cups, a European Cup Winner's Cup and a League Cup by spending less money in both gross and net terms in his first ten years as manager than Manchester City did on their way to relegation in the same time period. More money was spent on Clive Allen than Paul Ince, Tony Coton than Peter Schmeichel, Keith Curle and Terry Phelan's combined fees cost more than Roy Keane and Eric Cantona's.

Now lets not be childish and delete my post, let me have your thoughts and opinions, and your feedback, please :)

To kill your joy of reporting to ragcafe with "I've fukin destroyed them with facts"...

I like how you've took a year that fits you but somehow forgot he came there in 1986 ;)

Since 1986 til 2000. United were 50 millions in transfer minus. City 10. In first 9 years that were crucial in establishing his team to be competitive his minus was 23 millions while City's was 3.5.

Not that City didn't have wrong transfers but United became competitive team by doing exactly what City did in last few years - heavily overspending the other teams. You can talk as much as you want about your isstry and earning money but facts are facts ;)

Finally some use from this site:

Interesting post from a United forum with regards to some of your claims that Fergie bought the title, outspent everyone etc....

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/manchester-city/historische-kader/verein_281_2011.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/manch ... _2011.html</a>

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/manchester-united/historische-kader/verein_985_2010.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/manch ... _2010.html</a>

Now kindly piss off (sorry, couldn't resist).

Manchester City FC: Figures mainly from soccerbase. Likely to be several errors and ommisions but cannot find a better record.

Nothing better to do on a Sunday evening there buddy than copy & pasting stats on a rivals forum, you must have a really exciting life. Obsessed with the current champions are we :D

I don't care about any years but those that led to initial success. Just as City had to spend heavily to be competitive in 2008-2012, United did in Ferguson early years.

1986/87

Man United + 2.618.000 £
Man City - - -205.150 £

1987/88

Man United - 2.376.000
Man City + 1.694.000

1988/89

Man United - 66.880
Man City - 22.000

1989/90

Man United - 7.176.000
Man City - 251.000

1990/91

Man United - 1.254.000
Man City - 145.200

1991/92

Man United - 3.678.400
Man City + 80.960

And then titles started to come in, none of them till then. And Man United balance prior first Ferguson's title was 12.380.000 in minus and City were around 1 million in plus. And most notably - United spend 12 mil. net in last 3 years before first title while City spent 300k. That's 40 times more, City would need to spend some 5 billions in last 5 years to match that and let's not even mention how much behind in players department City were unlike United in their initial investment period ;)

First significant positive transfer year for United was 1995/96 when they profited 17 millions but then went to spend 3 times of that in next 3 years.

It's absolutely not relevant how they did later as they made success, fans and money after initial big investment. Just as City are going to do now :)

YOu can play dumb as much as you want but that's the fact ;)

This is something that they always come out with. One thing to bear in mind is that it cost £3.20 to sit in the 'E' block of the Stretford End seats in 1988. How much is it now?

That's right, there is a thing called inflation you thick twat. Obviously, our spending has seen us spend more actual money because it has come over the last 5 years. Why don't we look at the British Transfer Fee record? I think we've broken it once, for Robinho over the last 25 years. In other words, we pay the going rate or less most of the time.

Off had, I can think of Gary Pallister, Roy Keane, Andy Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney...........

Some of United's transfer fees are gigantic when adjusted for inflation. Especially Veron, Ferdinand, and Rooney's. I'm sure they push £50million to £60million each. I mean £28.1million for Veron in 2001. 2001! We get blamed along with Real and Chelsea but United have been as bad as anyone for inflating transfer fees and wages (Keane the first PL player to make £50,000/week back in 2000).
