Gloomy Sunday aka The Hungarian Suicide Song is regarded by many as one of the most sad and depressing songs ever written. It was composed in 1933 and recorded by many artists including Billie Holiday (1941), Sarah Vaughan (1961), Sinead O'Connor (1992) and Bjork (2010)
 
All of these can make me tear up.

For the first, I think it's something to do with what they call foreboding joy.


For the second, probably because it contains two of my personal emotional triggers: the tragedy of unrealised beauty and death (often the cause).


Finally folks, to push you over the edge, Roberta manages to combine all of the above in what for me is akin to a lament to what was, what could have been and what is perhaps no more.
 


Lyricist Penzabene had just found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Unable to deal with the pain and unable to stop loving his wife, Penzabene expressed his pain in the lyrics of this song. The distraught Penzabene committed suicide on New Year's Eve 1967, a week after the single's release.
