Bad News came out before Spinal Tap. 83 to 84.

That’s fair and Rik Mayall never to be discounted — I loved him. But as I understand it, they were doing the same thing at the same time but easier to get the TV show out faster.

Not in long format mate!!! Only in a sketch. And not with basically all ad libs, which makes it even better.

Woody Allen did a feature mockumentary in 1969 called Take the Money and Run (available in full on Youtube btw). Fellini also did one in 1970. Non-comedy versions go back to the 30s. Although Spinal Tap is certainly the best example of the genre, and the one that influenced the most copycats later on.
