missed the bank on wed and was going to put it in thursday, then realised after i left i was off and not back till friday, easy looking back in hindsight that i should have locked my draw.

Someone else must have known it was in there? Would the cleaners really root through your drawer and lift up an innocuous-looking pile of envelopes just on the off chance that there might be something worth taking underneath them? Doesn't sound like the cleaners to me.
