Ched Evans - serious injury

I speculated it was CTE related, not necessarily CTE itself. Then kaz asked what CTE, which sparked the CTE discussion.

I imagine it is a spinal issue that may also be causing neurological problems (CTE related).

This happened to my cousin, who ended up having to stop playing entirely when is was 29 because he was in severe pain and was experiencing migraines and blurred vision.

Thanks.

That's pretty much what I think - neck/vertebral compression on nerves/soft tissue from repetitive whiplash type movements (not the best description, I admit).

He's 34 now though, so realistically it's a retirement injury, I'd think. At least he will have 4 months minimum to get a prognosis before next season, and the decision may be made for him by the doctors.

Thanks.

Let’s hope the decision is made for him. Players will almost always want to extend their careers for many reasons, at the expense of medium and long-term suffering that almost always out ways any short term gain.

In the case of my cousin, he has now been diagnosed with early-onset ALZ at 52. His specialists largely put it down to spinal and brain trauma from being what we would call an “agricultural” defender from the age of 8.

It is a danger football in general should start taking seriously and I actually back the US ban on headers in u10 football and reckon it should probably be raised to u13.

Thanks.

On the news it said PNE said they hope he should be playing again once recovered.
Strange comment when the report is "life changing"

The statement indicates that surgery is needed, so it not be CTE (I didn't think that could be treated surgically?).

Maybe a neck/vertebral issue instead?
Think you're right, likely cervical vertebral issue, perhaps prolapsed disc or compression fracture. Potential life changing as reported due to risk of paralysis. Heading footballs with a serious neck problem not going to happen

I played CB at school and remember one particular game around u12 where the opposition goalie had a massive kick on him and I kept heading the high ball clear.
Opposition manager at the end tap me on the head and said 'must have a head like a brick'.
If that had been my kids now I would of insisted they let it bounce first

I have cervical spine issues (C0/C1, C3,4,5 & C7/T2) and he won't be coming back to play football, if that's his issue. I had to retire a few years early but if he has any sense he should take it easy.

I am sorry to hear that. I have thoracic issues that are related to my time playing (took some bad falls when challenging in the air in midfield, one on my neck which cause a compression fracture in my T1, and another that further injured it and caused new mild fractures in my T9/T10, along with a broken rib). I always thought they were lesser injuries to my knee issues until recently.

Aging makes them all difficult to deal with, especially when you have other conditions complicating treatment.
