Lescott is currently a better defender in the Premier League than Verthongen is in the Erdivise.

Nowhere near as good on the ball but currently miles better as a defender.
This is a fallacy. Lescott is an average defender on a great team. JV is a good defender on a poor defensive team.

Martinez or VJ ?

Playing Martinez as a central defender is what Atletico is doing, because it's the best option for them atm. He's a midfielder, box to box type who can play central defender as well. A good defender he might be, but a great midfielder he is.
If we buy him it should be for a midfield role, an upgrade on Nigel.

I am undecided on this one because he is playing as a CB every game and never played as a midfielder this season which rise few question marks for me.

But you'd love Jan Vertonghen on the other hand, who's played a much more mediocre season and only played as a CB every game this season? :D

Did you watch the under 21 comp last summer? Martinez played as Spain's creative centre mid and basically ran the show. He was the outstanding player of the tournament and was that good Mata had to make way and play on the wing! There is absolutely no question that Martinez would be a better aquisition than Vertonghen as he can play CB, DMF, CMF and box to box. The fact that he could cover at CB gives us more options with the squad

Yes I did. And no, he wasn't the creative center mid, Herrera and Alacantara were in a 2 games, and Mata joined Alacantara in one game, and Parejo and Alacantara in another. In every game he was the base of the midfield. Yes he was good, and move the ball seamlessly, but his own individual creativity was subsumed and untested on a team that was brimming with creativity everywhere in midfield and attack with: Alacantara, Mata, Herrera, Muniain, Adrian, Jefren, Parejo, Capel, and Bojan. It is hard to judge the creativity of the base player Martinez. Sure he kept possession well and moved the ball along nicely and was a good outlet whenever the others got stuck. But he was seldom the creator or the guy moving the team at that tourney.

I have seen him Yaya at Athletic a few times in the past, but it is still hard to project him into our team. We really don't have an excess of one touch passers and movers like Spain did or most Spanish teams are used to. I think he is a very good player, but I really find projecting him onto our team harder than most do.

That said, I am considering JV for CD not CM. Martinez might be a great fit for CM, but I think JV is a perfect fit at CD.

Jan Vertonghen: Ajax captain
• Vertonghen targets English switch
• Vertonghen tipped for Spurs switch

Vertonghen is contracted to Ajax until 2013 butis set to leave the Dutch club at the end of the season, and he had previously revealed that Spurs were at the head of the queue to sign him.

However, the Belgian defender, who was at the Emirates last week to watch Arsenal beat AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League at the request of former Ajax team-mate Thomas Vermaelen, has named the Gunners as a possible destination.

"My agent knows what clubs I'm willing to go to. Arsenal are obviously one of them," Vertonghen said in the Daily Express. "Ajax are busy trying to find solutions to replace me."

The 24-year-old came through the youth ranks at Ajax and is now captain of the club, but has made it clear he wishes to join a Premier League side at the end of the Eredivisie campaign.

"Who wouldn't want to play football at a top club in England?" Vertonghen said. "But first I want to concentrate fully on the title race."

Vertonghen has been at Ajax his entire career, except for a season-long loan with Belgian side Waalwijk in 2006-07, and was named captain following goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg's move to Roma last summer.

He is going to move to England. The only question now is where?
