Pet Hates on the road!

People who block the outside lane on Back Moor Mottram when they are going straight on because they haven't moved into the inside lane stopping people turning right to Stalybridge. Why don't they turn right to Stalybridge, first left then right at the lights? ;-)

People who don't know the difference between breaks and brakes.

I'll get my coat.

Knobheads:

Who do u-turns in junctions.

Lollipop people who instead of stockpiling kids jumps out and stop the traffic for each and every individual schoolkid.

Salesmen who drive so close they might as well be on your rear parcel shelf.

Boy racers with their stupid oversized exhausts, and ridiculously loud base heavy stereo systems.

Who won`t queue up, but will take the outside lane and try to cut in as late as possible.....TWATS

Why would I be? Where is the sense in leaving a lane empty instead of using all the available space and merging in turn when the lane actually closes?

It's called pushing in ! It's not a welcome invitation to infuriate other road users and make their journey longer. Just saying

And that is the problem - it isn't pushing in. It is merely merging later, with the benefit of reducing the length of the tailback by the length of the queue of single file traffic to the actual lane closure. Here is a pretty picture of how others do it:

If you take all the vehicles in the right hand lane and put them behind those on the left, you will see why moving over too early actually has a worse effect.

But one of the reasons the left hand lane is backed up so far is because it has to keep stopping to let the drivers in the right hand lane in. If they had merged earlier, when room was available, the traffic would flow quicker and the tailback would be far smaller.

If you take that logic to the nth degree then all motorways would be only one lane, as all traffic would be better off merging as early as possible to make the flow better.

The issue is that most people are not confident about merging and slowing down from speed and would rather take the safe option of getting in the "eventually correct" lane as soon as possible so the chance of something "tricky" like a merge a 20 mph is avoided.
