It's Quiet - a new dawn

Well we prioritised incorrectly.

I wish people would stop with the Pep can do no wrong shite - our fullbacks are probably the worst set in the whole of the Prem and it's an utter disgrace that we haven't strengthened that position over the last few years, bar taking Sagan on a free.

no they aren't.

And we did prioritise correctly, because we can still sign any combination of Heinrichs, Kolosinac, Grimaldo etc. etc., whilst we could easily have missed out on Stones, Sane, Jesus, Gundogan if we'd passed on them for any of your choices above or say a Vrsaljko because we prioritised our budget elsewhere.

Think it was simply we couldnt move any out and there was no room in the squad, If we had been able to sell any of our fullbacks we would have brought new ones in.

We'd have been able to pick up anything half decent for circa £10mil which would have been a huge improvement on Clichy,
Bit of a waste of £10m that when we could pick up a terminally ill kitten from the animal rescue for nothing and it would still be an improvement on Clichy.

Did we need Nolito?

And how come we bid for Laporte and Bonucci yet didn't bid decent money for ny full backs?

As I've mentioned earlier, we could have paid off one of them or stuck one in the stands, it wouldn't have been detrimental to our expenditure as none of them are on immense money.

Bottom line is that Pep thought they were an acceptable quartet for the season, and he was fucking massively wrong.

How do you know what Pep thought?

All about opinions mate, but I'm still in the "having shit fullbacks has cost us this season" camp.

We'd have been able to pick up anything half decent for circa £10mil which would have been a huge improvement on Clichy, someone we'd have been confident could play second fiddle to a top drawer left back signed this summer.

I agree. I'd wager that most of the goals we've conceded have come from clichys side. He's terrible.

Probably beecause Pep wanted to play 3 at the back. You could say he misjudged the league and got it wrong, but at least he had a plan. Maybe he thought he could get away with it. He said himself he can't clear out the entire squad so it's a process. We will buy full backs in the summer. Some of the signings bar Nolito had been necessary in the way he wants to play though. We needed Sane, a player with pace who's a real threat. We would have been stuck with having Navas play in which he has pace, but only always looks to cross instead of get in the box and score. I think we also couldn't pass up on the opportunity to buy Gabriel Jesus.

I know that mate, but for example we could have gone for people like Ben Davies or Van Aanholt or Bertrand last summer, none of whom would have cost any more than £15mil or so, all of whom would have made adequate back ups to whoever we went for this summer.

You don't know this because you don't know who and how many fullbacks we are buying. If are buying 1 LB and 1 RB/DM (Fabinho) like I think we should then buying any of the players you mention would fuck us this summer.

Ffs..

I was using them as EXAMPLES, and one thing is for sure, they are all 10x the player that fucking Clichy is!

Again...Clichy was under contract. Why are you blaming Pep for that?

And they are shitty examples that aren't good enough and won't be better than the players we bring in this summer. So it would have been a waste and put us in another situation where we have players to offload.

In fairness we can infer Pep's thinking here. If he didn't think they' were okay, we can assume he'd have done something about it. That for me is a fair inference to make. That said, I think fullbacks at best ranks 3rd or 4th on the list if things that have caused us to fade in the league. Goalkeeper, poor finishing, injuries, all superseding fullback. So I still don't get Rammy's rant :)

You cant just make four players disappear, who would all be earning approx 100k a week,3 of which still had a 12 months contract and another with 24.

Unfortunately,we allowed ourselves to end up in a position where the players hold the cards.

Sure you can.

Buy better players in their position and then they lose their starting spot and want to leave or ride out their contracts on the bench. Just because we have them doesn't mean we have to use them.

If we can force Aguero out this summer surely the same can be done for inadequate defenders.

Because we didn't have 4 CBs running down their contracts making them impossible to move.

Good point mate....My issue will be if we spend another summer spending big on forwards and neglect the fullback position again. Most fans at the start of the season could have told you the fullback position and CM were going to cost us points this season and thats what has happened. The holes the fullbacks have left at the back while trying to play Pep's system, is half the reason for all the mistakes we see. We've been stuck with 4 over 30 fullbacks that just dont fit his style of play. I believe the long term transfer plan for the fullback position has been poor and should have been better managed, ready for Pep's arrival. This summer we have no excuses for not fixing the problem! ; ) Should be a fun summer...
