So you mean a lot, Ok whats a lot? do you mean 10% or 40% or something else.

I think that those that play the system are a very small minority, less than 5% if I have to put a figure on it.
I do think that the vast majority would work if the jobs were available. The evidence for this is easy to come by. The vast majority of those claiming welfare are people with jobs 4.8 million people claiming tax credits in 2015-16 (last year figures were available) because they are low paid and 5.0 million people claiming other benefits because of low pay (they are probably the same people). That alone counts for nearly 26% of the welfare budget. Whereas unemployment benefits were claimed by 705,000 and accounted for 1.1% of the welfare budget.
Just for clarity the majority of the rest goes to the disabled (19%), pensions (46%) and family benefits not based on income (6%) and the total welfare budget is 211 billion

Yes I think the movement of the global economy and how the impact of that has been managed by successive governments of three parties have taken away the jobs and more importantly secure jobs.
I think the experience of those claiming welfare benefits (about 6 million people) and how they are portrayed by especially Tory politicians leads them to believe they have a very limited future.
Can you tell me where these figures come from? They have completely changed my view of the world lol

Making preparations for the coming years, including having the ability to make difficult decisions and see them through - it is good management.

We will certainly need that in the years to come.

ha ha ha keep polishing that turd mate. Its bullshit campaigning. Facts are many many Tory voters are pro Brexit and anti the overseas aid being paid - so she guarantees that. Many are pensioners who have done rather well out of the government they voted in - she refuses to confirm the triple lock will remain intact. They got voted in two years ago on a manifesto that promised no VAT and income tax rises - Hammond wants that abolished.

Now I am not saying these things wouldn't have formed part of the difficult decisions they have to make but FFS don't they know how to campaign? Putting this out there in week one is crass mis-management of the campaign they will now find the debate moving away from what they feel their strong suit is of Brexit onto home policies where clearly they don't have a good story to tell and the clamour for her to go on the TV debates and face the people and the the other party leaders and answer questions about this will just increase - when she does that will be seen as another U-turn - if she doesn't it will be spun that all they have said is nailed on and they are going to raise taxes and bash pensioners whilst giving money away in aid. Whenever was that Tory policy?

Beauty of it is no opposing leader needs do too much whilst they go around shooting each other in the feet like this - shambolic

Thanks for bringing us out of Europe Corbyn, you complete dick!
I'm a Socialist but will be voting Lib Dem.

Eh? How do you pin the Brexit result on Corbyn ? No blame on Cameron for being railroaded into a referendum by a few back benchers then treating it like Indyref1 in Scotland and assuming a win was inevitable so holing a lacklustre campaign? No blame on Gove, Johnson, Davies and the like for leading the Brexit Tories? No Blame on UKIP and Farage for their misleading campaigning?

I suspect you are not a socialist at all my friend.

It makes sense for them to abolish the promise to not increase taxes. Its a completely unecessary promise since nobody believes that they would ever raise taxes by more than Labour.

I dont think it does them any harm at all to suggest that all is not going to be rosy as far as the economy is concerned. People tend to vote Labour when the economy is doing very well and there's money to spend on public services, they tend to vote Tory if thing's are likely to be tight.

Bollocks - people vote on the basis of what they think will be best for them - only when they are sure they are sorted do they think of the wider picture

And if labour had anounced a tax rise was possible, I expect it would have been called that another of their tax and spend ruin the country policies.

Should be a Labour land slide then.

If that were true then why have the Tories usually been voted in when the economy is at a worse state than the one they bequeathed Labour?

Maybe but they will still win...easily
May's nose could grow like Pinocchio's whilst stood on a podium spouting said lies but it won't make one iota of difference because they will still win ....easily
No matter what the BBC, Guardian, i, New Statesman, Tribune or Socialist Worker say or print they will still win...easily
No matter how many students or rabid swivel eyed loony lefties pack out that piss soaked scruffy old tramp Corbyn's stage managed rallies they will still win ....easily
Enjoy
Yes may will win because of people like you. Shame how britain has evolved to this but reap what you sow tory boy.

So as a socialist, you have issue with the Tories not promising to freeze tax rates?

Surely this is great news?

Should be a Labour land slide then.

not at all - what shuld worry the Tories is their Coalition of Chaos will win if they fail to mobilize the Tory vote. Why should an OAP couple continue to vote Tory when they are taking steps to penalise them now? Why should a hard Brexiter who wanted a hard Brexit and foreign aid stopped vote Tory? They won't vote Labour.......... they just won't bother and thats the risk for May - great campaigning so far.

If that were true then why have the Tories usually been voted in when the economy is at a worse state than the one they bequeathed Labour?

Tell me when a UK govt has been voted into power by an electorate with truly altruistic intent? Never - people always look after #1. They like the idea of tax increases to pay for things - just one's they don't have to pay. They like the idea of welfare cuts - just not the ones that they get. They like the idea of affordable housing- just not near enough to them to devalue their own home and so on. Parties that offer to take and redistribute don't win unless they can promise everyone they won't take from them but the will distribute to them and to causes they support - impossible of course but thats folk for you.

so you accept they promise a Tax and Spend Tory government in manifesto 2017 then? Can't see the Mail, Express nor Telegraph getting behind that one. This mornings Scum has already had a pop

You've unnecessarily complicated a simple point - but of course it's about tax relief, as the Tories cut benefits to fund lower taxes for the rich.

OK, let's play. You either give poor people a million pounds or you give rich people half a million. Do the rich need another half-million? No. How are they going to spend it? Where are they going to spend it? Villas abroad? Holidays abroad? A yacht? Lots of work for the UK there. http://www.superyachts.com/directory/yacht-builders.htm Even canal narrowboats are now made in Poland.

Give it in benefits and most of it will be spent in Britain, a lot at 20% VAT (a regressive tax that proportionate to income is higher for the poor than the rich), in shops where the workers on their meagre wages will buy other stuff in Britain.

Is that complicated enough?

What lower taxes for the rich. It's 45 percent. It was 40 under Blair??

No. I accept they reserve the right to increase taxes should they wish and/or need.

And if labour had anounced a tax rise was possible, I expect it would have been called that another of their tax and spend ruin the country policies.

That's because Labour are perceived to be much more likely to raise taxes. If the tories say they might have to raise taxes, nobody believes that they will raise them by more than the absolute minimum. If Corbtn says they might raise taxes, the expectation is that it will be to make the pips squeak.
