Centre back options

Jose gimenez for me, if he is entering the last year of his contract how hasn't he renewed or moved on thought he was is really highly rated?

Shockingly obvious really but like you said our squad is so good now we will probably get away with not getting him buts it's a shame. I will be really upset if he goes to Pool and we end buying an inferior CB next summer (could easily see it happening).
It is silly talk what you and Neville are trying to argue. We either need a player or we don't. The argument that we are so good that we might get away with it is a copout.

I can similarly point to the greatness of Messi, or the greatness of Veratti or that of a myriad of other good players and make the same argument you are making. Oh we solo need them, but we might get away with it with our good squad.

Oh and just for fun, take out Van Duke on that comparison chart and insert Otamendi. And then come back and tell me what you saw :)

P.S: I see @Neville Kneville is not quick to dismiss stats that support his arguments arguments now. Interesting :)

I seem to remember that you were arguing till the cows came home that Pep didn't want or need a centre back. He had other priorities. Now Pep says he does need a centre back and suddenly you are on side again...

And your love for the liability that is Otamendi is a joke. Its not all about stats. You must not watch our games if you think he is such a good CB. I have watched Van Dijk and he is top quality. Stats should be used as a supplement not as a main arguing point. Watching Otamendi, I am not even interested in his stats because he is a liability. Was terrible in a few of our season defining games so I don't give a shit if whoscored rate him as top 5 in the league.

Did we not need full backs last summer??? But as you say we either need a player or we don't. Your argument is ridiculous. We needed fullbacks last season but for more reasons than one (other priorities, budget, etc), fullbacks were not bought because Pep/City thought we could get away with it otherwise they would of been a higher priority.

Do you think Pep sees Fernandinho and Yaya as the ideal DMs for City??? The answer is no, we will 100% purchase a new DM next summer but as of now Pep thinks he can get away with Dinho and Yaya hence we haven't even thought about buying a DM this summer.

Its hilarious to hear folks suggest The stats should simply supports ones opinion from watching. As if that's not how anyone who concludes Otamendi is good arrived at that conclusion :) Very cute. Neville will be proud of you.

The highlighted suggests what is irrational about those who think like you. Meaning you are judging Otamendi on
1. "a few games"
A dumb way to judge anything.
2. "On games YOU consider season defining"
Again, another easy way to pick out bias, when you are the arbiter of what "season defining" is... You could just choose to pick the games he didn't shine in.

It is easy to see through your porous bias. But that's besides the point. Its not the fact that I like Otamendi. Its that I don't think there are many better defenders out there.

There are 2 things to consider when determining who will fit and may be better.
1, they have to play a system similar to ours. I.e. One that leaves defenders on island often.
2. Then compare said player's performance and consistency to Otamendi's.

This kind of analysis immediately dismisses the like of Bonucci who simply would fail in such a system.

For my money it has to be someone like Laporte. Otherwise we are just going to buy another seemingly better player who will quickly be benched by Otamendi and you all will be here next year swearing by the next defensive version of Bony...

I am sure every poster here considers the 3-1 home loss to Chelsea and both Monaco games as season defining, wouldn't you. Otamendi was terrible in all 3. Mbappe toasted him and made a mockery of him countless times. We almost lost Arsenal away due to his howler near the end where Arsenal were extremely unlucky not to score. In the home game against the rags, Rashford toasted him a few times, we were very lucky not to concede.

I don't know what more evidence one needs to conclude that Otamendi is a liability. There are many defenders out there that are much better than him. The only reason he is still here is basically Kolarov wanted out and left for Roma. We will struggle to even get 20m for him.

Don't argue with him, he lives on the opta state website, generally on the otamendi page with dirty used tissues beside him. Dax the statto.

Maybe we should sign VvD's replacement Wesley Hoedt. Never watched him but he's only 23, tall, left footed, great passer- ticks a lot of boxes

I could do a similar run down of Kompany. Who is generally comsidered the best CH of this generation.

"Season defining" is a silly made up idea that truly means nothing.

If I were to randomly pick, is say United away, Barca at home were both anticipated successful season defining games. The Leicester and Everton games were season defining failures. The 3 draws at home on the trot to lower table teams were other season defining failures.

Monaco was an epic 6-6 game over 2 legs.

But Chelsea? Didn't rate as anything. And if the home Chelsea game was indicative of anything it was the wastefulness of our attackers (which by the way has continued) and the inability of our goalie to save us or keep us in it like other top keepers did. Hence Ederson.
