I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but I applaud the club for not paying "whatever it takes" and "blowing everyone else out of the water" - what PSG are doing is not sustainable... Mbappe's wages (if what are being quoted is correct) are obscene for a kid and will only cause problems for them down the line when signing new players and renegotiating contracts with their current players - we know all to well how paying huge wages can bite you on the arse in years to come as you have to virtually give away fringe players because of their wages.

PSG may be doing what a lot of blues want City to do, but we obviously have a team in control of our spending who know what they are doing - the plan has always been to pay over the odds at the start of the takeover to boost us and then settle down into a sustainable business model which it looks like we are doing...

All PSG are doing is throwing huge amounts of money around (suddenly for some strange reason??) and they won't be able to recoup that money in the long term if they keep spending - yes football is cash rich at the moment but you can't keep milking the sponsorship cash cow year after year which is what they will need to do to balance the books.

I know what you mean - we 100% did do this at the start of the takeover (we had to) but it looks like we have now reached the level where we don't need to do that anymore plus shifting players on those huge wages is a real thorn in our side (giving Nasri away for example) but we did what we needed to do.

Feel bad for all the blues trying hard to come to terms with not signing Mbappe, performing all the reasoning and rationalization in particular about PSG's purported financial recklessness as if the club is handled by a bunch of lunatics who haven't a single idea about how business works or how to manage money at all.

Ha ha - i'm not trying to "come to terms" with anything, if we had signed Mbappe for what we thought he was worth and within our wage structure then I would have been as giddy as the next blue but not signing him because PSG have hugely overpaid isn't worth stressing over - I'm not saying PSG are being run by financial lunatics, they must have a plan (or think they do) but seeing as both us and Real Madrid were "at the table" with the same fee and wages it makes you scratch your head at PSG's valuation on the kid...?

It's deffo been silly season this window thanks to PSG but I very much doubt it's sustainable even for them, we must have reached a peak of what money is available in terms of sponsorship, prize money and TV deals? Companies like SKY, BT etc (the biggest TV rights payers) won't be able to pump more money into the game without increasing prices and seeing as they are already loosing money to online streaming it's very unlikely they would do that...

I guess we all have different views on what Mbappe is worth - I see him as a very promising player but £300k+ a week wages? Nah... not yet

I get the feeling this is escalating into an argument and it's Friday (and sunny) so i'll just post my reasoning and leave it there...

We are above PSG in the earnings table and we didn't think Mbappe was worth it
Real Madrid are way above us both in the table and their valuation was the same as ours
The rags and Barca weren't interested - both of which are also above us in earnings

SO - 4 clubs didn't want to "pay whatever it takes" and 1 club earning less than those 4 did... ??

But the post you replied to made some intelligent comments about their wages structure and cost base vs revenue stream going forward, which I think were pretty sensible and didn't at all deserve your "you haven't got a clue" tone in your response. Sure we don't know what commercial deals PSG have in the pipeline, but we do know that FFP will stop them from including inflated "sponsorship" revenue from related parties. And we also know - from our own experiences - how difficult it is to profitably offload players on huge wages.

He expressed a perfectly reasonable, considered opinion, which I think was a fair comment. If all anyone was allowed to say on here had to be backed up with indisputable evidence, it would be a very boring forum indeed.
