Do you reckon we'd be getting the same comments if we were talking about signing Martial or Rashford? Or do you think it's perhaps that people think he's about the right level for West Brom, which I'm pretty certain isn't where we're trying to get. The ex-rag is just another stick to beat him with, but it doesn't change the fact that our high line would be a disaster for a player without pace.
What like it is now with Otamendi and stones??

What evidence do peope have to say he is shit? Curious because a lot of people are saying he is bang average, but showing no proof or evidence to back up their claims. At the end of the day, people are lettig their bias cloud their view of the player imo.

What we need is a midfield powerhouse not Evans.
De Jong

If they don't fit then why did we spend nearly 100m on them then ? Why do we keep spending huge amounts on players that don't fit !!!
The problem City central defenders have is that they have had to be able to defend one on one.

Last season we had terrible full backs. We had no keeper and we had yaya trotting in front of them. And Kompany, the Captain was injured. Hopefully they have an easier job this season.

Bottom line is we have left this very late, and we need back up for our central defenders and I don't see any alternative to Evans so I hope we sign him.

There is a lot of rubbish being said about him. he wouldn't be my ideal signing for that position, but he would significantly improve the squad. His lack of pace does concern me a little, however Otamendi just about gets away with that. it's not everything. I think in a 442 with our quick full backs we'd get away with Evans lack of pace. Defending is as much about the unit rather than the individual. Not a ringing endorsement but we've prioritised other positions this window and I hope we do not come to regret that

I've watched him a few times and don't rate him at all. Bang average in my opinion. So, that's what I'm basing my opinion on.

Out of all the players who've left us in recent years very few have enhanced their reputation without playing for us as much as de Jong. He wasn't in our first team when he left, he was a midfield destroyer and he tended to slow our play and was never that good on the ball. I loved watching him play but it was pretty clear that he left as he was no longer a guaranteed starter.

Since he left he has been re-invented by some supporters as the missing link or our best midfielder since Bell.

Exactly this. Pulis, for all of his limited approach to the game, understands the art of defending in today's football. He has made him his captain! Objectively Jonny Evans is a good footballer and defender. The footballing world knows this.

I wouldn't necessarily put it down to revisionism or nostalgia. I loved him when he played for us and I was gutted the day we sold him. A great squad option for certain games and ha attributes we haven't replaced since. Wouldn't have been good enough on the ball for how we play now but we could really do with a player who has those skills as well as the quality we need on the ball.

Watched the rags/west brom a hundred times as i watch all the games on tv,is that good enough for you?

agree completely, we have never replaced what he did, Fernan is great but more attacking, dj protected the CD's superbly.

People understimate the job De Jong did for us based on how he played with the ball, he protected the defence and read the game very, very well, Allowing Yaya to storm forward and support our attacking players. Different type of football under Mancini but it still involved us dominating possession and breaking down teams.

Lescott wasn't very good on the ball either, yet him and Vinny is the best Centre Back pairing we've had in years. Sometimes it's not about the individual but how they fit the team dynamic. Look at Darren Fletcher, a distincly average footballer who played hundreds of times for united as part of a successful team, moved on only to play for Stoke and West Brom... we haven't replaced De Jong and there is no problem admitting that. It doesn't mean he would fit this way of playing, but our defence certainly could do with the same level of protection.
