New Kompany Calf Injury?

This is pretty much what Sam Lee said happened. We went for VVD but were quoted 60 million and thought that would eat into our Sanchez budget so left it.

Many versions of the story but I think if we had paid the 60 he would be here now. We will never know now.

It will never be proven one way or the other.

But we were being linked with VVD well before the transfer window, Pep, was openly talking about getting a player with similar presence to Kompany as insurance against his injuries, then suddenly nothing.

Nor can anyone except those directly involved.

Imo an acceptable bid from City, for Van Dyke, would result in Van Dyke playing for City.

Same probably for Chelsea or Utd.

But it would be a lot of money & more money than it would have been, in June. That bit, I am sure about.
It is a cheap rhetorical trick to make some unfounded claims about something, and then go on to complain about why somebody else do not react to this invented reality. It is being used a lot on Bluemoon, in particular by people who love to criticize the incompetence of Txiki and Pep. I can understand why, because the method with 100 percent certainty provides a basis for moaning, and I suspect that is what it is all about. That it is all based on fantasy does not seem to matter.

Concerning Van Dijk, maybe you are correct, maybe not. However for some reason nobody bought him this summer, despite him clearly wanting to leave. What the reason was this is anybody's guess, not something we can seriously criticize. Maybe we just need to accept that for John Stones to become better he needs to play games, and we have to accept some mistakes from him during this process. Weren't you always one who advocated playing and developing young players?

Didn't he wear a City shirt at training once that his team mates at Southampton had given him as a joke because he was being so heavily linked with us?

I have no idea what you are complaining about re my post.

If VVD is genuinely unavailable then our worldwide scouting network should find a whole bunch of alternatives better than Jonny Evans & sign one.

As for Stones. He has been our best cb pre season imo.

So ask Guardiola why he dropped him, not me.

VVD would not replace Stones.

Kompany has been irresponsible here. Playing for Belgium when injured started this problem - we have spent 2 years getting him fit again and now he gets a knock playing for Belgium again. Kompany has 30 games a season maximum in him - those games should be for City in key fixtures. Sorry but he needs to get his priorities right.
His priorities, as a passionate Belgian, are to play for his country and do the best he possibly can for them. For many footballers, especially foreign ones, it is the absolute pinnacle of their career and so it damn well should be.

Yes, it's disappointing for us, but let's not forget it is Vinny's passion that makes him the player he is.

Fingers crossed it is nothing serious.

Sanches & Mbappe was where the money was going.

Except we missed both.

That's why JFE was dependant on Mangala leaving.

It will never be proven one way or the other.

So Pep changed his mind mid window and thought "Ah fuck our defence, let me just buy Sanchez and Mbappe and go all out on attack and see where it brings us"?

FFS

But never we have still got Mangala to come back in no problems at all

Radio silence from the man himself is ominous

No idea.

All I know is we were scrabbling around for Jonny Evans on deadline day & didn't get him.

Figure out your own way of deciding it was sound management.

As a 4th choice, mainly because he's HG, so I don't consider him much of a loss.

There's a lot of untapped hypotheticals you could still explore as to why no additional CB was signed this window.
Maybe Vinny felt confident he'd make it to the winter window without any injury. Or maybe finding a suitable backup isn't as easy as you imagine, etc.
But I guess it's easier to play the blame game.

You have decided JFE was 4th choice & you are complaining about 'hypotheticals' .

It is my opinion that City needed a cb. Pep Guardiola, prior to the window opening, specifically mentioned how important Kompany was & how we should not leave ourselves without cover for such a player. And repeated it more than once.

Last Christmas, VVD's team mates gave him a City shrt, so strong were his links to City.

This window opens & apparently there was never any interest from City & what is more, we have no great interest in a cb.

At the end of the window, we are negotiating 20-30 mil for a '4th choice' cb. Yet we didn't try to sign one earlier.

It could all be coincidence.

I don't believe it. And I think it's stupid.

I don't care if you don't like the fact that I don't believe it as I'm perfectly entitled to that opinion & it isn't without a reasonable possibility that I could be right.

If you think, based on the same evidence, it was all good planning, fine, but please stop suggesting I am somehow being underhanded, by not agreeing with you.

Not clear when he got the injury as he played 90 mins against Gibraltar. Could be that g
ame, or it could have been in training afterwards. Or something innocuous.

Yeah, Martinez (the Belgian coach) said he got a kick tot the back of his knee during the game against Gibraltar, that's why he didn't play him for safety measures against Greece.
It's ominous that he still doesn't train with the group one week later though.

Do you honestly think he's anything other than a 4th choice?

Reports stated we were in for Leonardo Bonucci, Aymeric Laporte, Lucas Hernandez, Holger Badstuber and Van Dijk and these deals fell through because of various reasons, not because Pep thought better of it and went for attackers instead.

Ofcourse you're entitled to an opinion but you may just as well be wrong. Also keep in mind that even the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, instead of suggesting there was no plan to begin with.
Either way, not getting a replacement was always going to be a gamble no matter the reasons, fingers crossed it won't prove too costly.
