Burnley (3rd rd FA Cup) Post Match thread

Missed the game due to flight. Did we play well?
Yes really well.

One or two players had an off day eg Sane who varied between brilliant and rubbish. Burnley played their usual backs to the wall game but capitalised on a John Stones error and went into ht one-up.

It was like a Premiership game in terms of intensity. Everyone gave their all, and we had to be at our best to open up Burnley. Some sublime attacking play in the 2nd half. 1st half was a bit frustrating

No issue with it.

But it is anti football.

It’s certainly not entertaining football.

If you are comparing it to the free flowing, quick possession based football we play, then it could be construed that way by City fans.
We have raised the bar this season and some now seem to think any team who doesn't want to go toe to toe with us must be playing anti-football.
A team winning by punching well above their weight by whatever style suits their DNA could also be construed as entertaining by their fans, that is not for you or I to call.

Not sure you watched the same game as me, he was superb today.
Thought so too. Only player who was off his game a bit was Sane whose crossing was hit and miss but he still scored a good goal.

Really good all round performance against difficult opponents

They’ve not played good football at all.

They have stayed compact and won games whilst scoring less than 1 per game.

fair enough thats your opinion. i think they have played good football in a lot of games this season. i wouldnt say they just hoof it all the time. . compared to us maybe it is 'bad football', but its got them high up the league and they arent exactly going to be open and expansive against us

Gundogan is really starting to irritate me, he was bordering on appalling today until that wonderful piece of individual magic.

That's the issue. He isn't good enough to be our regular number ten, though, even with his keen eye for a a pass.

And he sure as damn it doesn't do enough in the rest of the midfield. He doesn't get involved enough and was lucky that both Dave and Fernandinho did his donkey work for him today.

Again, Sane falls into the same category. We don't stretch the pitch nearly as well when he's not play, but he's been stealing a place in this team for weeks, only in my opinion.

He is starting to give the attitude he already thinks he has made it, not willing to so the basics and tracking back?

Imagine how good this kid can be when he matures.

Gundogan is frustrating because he is better than anyone else in the league in a cm role but is struggling to show that consistently at the moment. His vision, ability to play a pass and energy are the reason he is so good but we are only seeing glimpses.

Think people are forgetting that he is only just coming back from a criciate injury. I personally think it’s mental at the moment and with time this mental damage will “heal” and he will be immense

And the interesting point is that coaches and clubs which turf up at The Etihad continue to employ the same tactics. Ninety minutes of attempting to stifle the most creative team the PL has seen for a long time. Bournemouth, Southampton, Burnley in the PL game, et al, AND IT HASN'T WORKED. Palace nearly made it, but I think coaches will continue to employ these tactics because they want the RDAHMeedya accolades for being the one who gets one over on Pep.

Burnley play a very physical, defensively disciplined game, but I don't see that they have much choice. If Burnley could sign David Silva, I am sure they would, and they'd adjust their game accordingly

On one level I agree, no problem when we win 4-1, but it's a mare when teams do that and beat us 1-0.

Gundogan needs game time to find is form and i don't think this season it will happen for him with this squad unless of injury. so lets hold fire on Gundogan he is a great player and can be long term player for city and he will find his role just a pity the long term injury he picked up was at the wrong time and pep could not wait and new signings and the setup pep is using this season means no double hold role in midfield unless we have to change from wing backs to wingers

so hold fire on Gundogan yes he is not that box to box power player of old and may never be under pep with the setup but world class players can adapt to new roles

Average first half and sloppy goal but brilliant again second. Same recovered well after some poor crosses at the start of the half. Great back heel for the 2nd and aguero amongst the goals. Not sure why he felt the need to bring De Bruyne on but hey ho.

Weird watching it with the standers in level 1 having been moved from SS3. You don't see the bigger picture and runs off the ball so much down there. Some right dinosaurs in there too. "Play it forward" "get rid of it"

Have they been watching us for the last 2 years?

Proved finally that noise doesn't travel in that part of the ground either. Couldn't hear Burnley fans at all. Not one song and I guess there must have been some noise up there. City fans noise doesn't travel much either even on same tier. The acoustics are obviously very poor.

i was in the colin bell stand level one for the first time today and had quite a good view of both ss1 and ss3. tbf when city fans were singing, especially in the second half we were actually quite loud. its when different bits of the south stand start signing different songs at the same time you notice there is a problem acoustically. all we need though is for more people to sing. ( simple answer) there are too many people in the south stand who dont join in.

see my last reply to you. Have we won every game playing the way we do? no we haven't we have had to win ugly at times which was well received on here IIRC
Which games have we won ugly?

I ask so I can show the stats that it isn’t true.

All those on the match thread criticising City for a slightly off first half shouldn't be allowed to watch this team. Genuinely thick.

Not even everything works, every time. It is impossible. A football team is a combination of 11 different people all trying to achieve one goal in synchronicity. But they are 11 individuals. They can't achieve that for 90 mins. But that's the joy of football, when it does work it is poetry. And we are seeing footballing poetry more than any other set of fans in Europe at the moment.
