Biscuits and Gravy.....what are they?

Oh yeah, thanks for putting me straight, it seems it is a Canadian programme. However, the series I saw was going around restaurants in American cities. Looks like they've had episodes in Dublin, London and Panama City too. Anyway, the point is, the American restaurants that featured in - Canadian programme - You Got To Eat Here, through some really strange combinations together.

I knew I should have put a smiley. : )

Bakers down the road make beautiful corn bread, won't buy any other bread since I tried it.

You tell them. Wholewheat? White? Rye?

Fuck off. Cornbread forever.

Has your accent changed too? Are you wearing dungarees with no shirt and a baseball cap?

Watch programmes like Diners Drive ins and Dives on the Food Network ( sky 248 ) and you'll see this and other American blunders/wonders. You watch them and realise you have never felt like having a chip butty or a plate of tater 'ash without delay more in your life. Its the tendency to to refer to fats or lard as " grease" that don't help. Or the idea that if an 8oz steak you are eating is lovely then it cannot be denied that a 32oz one must be four times as nice. There are also substances referred to as cheese that to look at make you shudder and think " wtf is that !!?? "

I think I need to cleanse my palate with an Eccles cake now - and a cup of tea.

American “cheese” is a crime against humanity. I was in a famous NY Diner and as part of the sandwhich, that would have resulted in Moby Dick signing up for Weightwatchers, was this stuff imitating cheese.

I removed the whole 3lb of the shit and the waitress asked if they was anything wrong.

I told her I had tasted better tasting plastercine at primary school. She was shocked. She seemed actually pained when I told her American cheese was voted the worst in the world. I made that up as I have no fucking idea if people nationally rate cheese, but, I felt like twisting the knife. :)

They took $5 off the bill though.

But, American cheese? Fuck off.

Anybody eating fried cheese is wanting a coronary stent. I’ll agree that the canned “cheese” such as used for nachos at baseball games is revolting and should be banned. I’m always amazed when I see grown adults eating the stuff.

I've seen a vast improvement in American cheese in the last 25 years. Vermont, Wisconsin, Oregon and New York State are all producing some excellent cheddars. I was a cheese snob when I first moved here and there is still some true shite produced here but like the beer, there are people working on it.
One thing over here is the huge selection of good european cheese available these days in most supermarkets. Way more selection than anything I've seen in Blitey....:)

To be fair, it was a few years ago. I certainly hope they are attempting to do something. As for our cheeses? How dare you! We have great cheeses and if you are indeed a cheese snob you would know that.

Good day sir! :)

I was most definately not knocking Brit cheeses, They might be the best anywhere. I can buy at least a dozen brit cheeses in my local market plus cheese from France, Germany, Switzerland...the list goes on

in Seattle i mentioned to my cousin that Jed Clampett prefered grits and jowls to city food. So off we went to a town called Concrete he said was known for "down home" cooking. Corn-based sauce , with fried pigs cheek that unsurprisingly tasted of bacon. Was good but the journey over iirc Snoqualmie pass was epic, snow-capped peaks, eagles, forests made a welcome break from the efficient but bland interstates. WA state Uni make the best cheese i've tasted, Cougar, if you get the chance to taste it you wont be disappointed

I was flying to the US on Virgin and had an American woman sat next to me. They served up “afternoon tea” which consisted of a cuppa with scones, jam and clotted cream. The woman was most put out that they had given her biscuits with sultanas in them and was further horrified to see I was spreading the jam and cream on it. I had eaten biscuits and gravy on a previous trip to Texas so knew what she was on about. I spent the next half hour putting her right on what biscuit and cookies were. Plus, I explained that scones were both sweet or cheese flavoured just to add to her confusion.

My Son has just been offered a place playing lacrosse in North Carolina for Methodist University. So I may find out.

Ok hold on...

Biscuits and gravy is one of the best things on this god dammed planet. I will excuse the ignorance in this thread as you all obviously lack the sophisticated palates to enjoy such culinary masterpieces
