Matthijs de Ligt

Yeah and it’s not a coincidence that his 2 worst games are against Liverpool’s pressing. And against Monaco last year that Kev had to play as the deepest midfielder because we couldn’t advance the ball.

'Kev' stank the fucking place out v Liverpool & did a fair impression of Joey Barton without the tackles or composure, but for some reason is immune to this absolute bullshit Fernandinho regularly has to suffer.

Yeah just look at the games when Kev doesn’t play and when Dinho doesn’t play, then compare those results.

Why some of you characters are so keen to disrespect one of the best midfield players this country has seen I have no.idea but it's the exact same mentality which means that Colin Bell never gets mentioned in the same breath as Keegan & Bobby fucking Charlton.

Great job twisting my words. Dinho has done an admirable job for us. But he is no means the perfect DM for us. Or are you saying in all of world football he’s the best and cannot be replaced?

I recon he can do the same job Walker is currently doing.
Good shout. Would definitely be one of the options. Not as athletic as Walker, but offers infinitely more on the ball. Has an experience of playing as RCB for Holland.
A lopsided 433 with Mendy attacking his wing and Laporte-Stones-De Ligt forming a back 3 while in possession? Sounds good to me.

I think the reason we're searching for another DM is more to do with Fernandinho's age and lack of proper back up rather than his footballing ability

I would say it’s a bit of both. He’s perfect for when we’re against 90% of the footballing sides, especially in England, but against the other 10% that presses high AND well, there’s a better man for the job. Unfortunately to be the best in Europe and win CL we must be able to beat the other 10%. It’s funny because had we not drawn Liverpool, we could’ve go on to win the CL. But that’s exactly why we have to prepare for the 10%.

He has to be replaced as he is getting old & the workload is too high.

Best in that position ? I'd say probably yes. I can't think of anyone who could currently do the job(s) Pep asks Fernandinho to do, better than he does it. One of the best centre mids I've ever seen certainly. And with a little help, rather than being put next to Yaya or a collection of attacking mids who keep giving the ball away in their own half, would have no problem seeing off Liverpool imo, which may be what happens next season with him & maybe Jorginho.

Alright that’s it for me. Dinho best in the world apparently haha. I’m gonna take myself off of this.

I haven't studied him but he looks to me like he would easily do the half right back, half cb thing which Walker does.

So that effectively gives him three potential positions, as fullback, cb in a two & cb in a 3.

That should get him games, (provided he steps up to the mark).

I'd argue that. I don't think we could replace Fernandinho with any player in the world and win more games given the unique blend he brings to both our attacking and defending. He could play very capably in any of the outfield positions for us. I'd also say that he's the player most responsible for the tempo at which we play, giving Silva and KDB the space they need to do what they do.

It's worth looking for a replacement as he's into his thirties and won't be able to keep up his exceptional level of football forever. Moreover, any replacement is likely to be an attacking or a defensive player who'll need cultivating into the role our DM plays (as Fernandinho was more of an attacking midfielder for Shakhtar). Jorginho has been heavily linked but Allan is the Napoli player most similar to what we need in terms of style.

Your point is true but that’s why I said he’s fine against 90% of the opposition, but to be the best, we have to beat the other 10%. Dinho’s role isn’t anything unique, we’re not the only team in the world that plays a DM that must be able to attack and defend. I’d say Thiago is a better fit for us. Lahm was also a better DM for Pep at Bayern than Dinho. Again I don’t want to derail the thread even more. I’d be happy to continue this in Dinho’s thread.

One of our best ever player? For sure. Best in his position in the world? Maybe take off your blue-tinted glass.

He plays as first choice for MANCHESTER CITY in Pep Guardiola's second season, at THIRTY THREE YEARS OLD. OF COURSE he is one of the best in that position.

People read books on Pep & say 'ah he wants this' then he starts Fernandinho every fucking week for two years & they think he doesn't really want him.

Such utter tripe.

Jorginho CAN'T do what Pep asks Fernandinho to do, full stop. We will probably have to change, in order to replace Fernandinho, as we will struggle to find another player who can do what he does. Why ? Because he's one of, if not 'the' best & allows us a flexibility few teams can match.
