Of course players can run down contracts, you called them professional though for doing so which to me isn't. Whoever that person is, be it a City player or someone completely irrelevant where there are no emotions involved. For me it's loyalty, Sterling has been treated very well by City. I don't follow any romantic notion that he should have an allegiance to us for life there is a difference between just wanting to leave and running a contract down. Morally for me it is wrong for anyone to do that, like I said it wouldn't harm him in the slightest to sign a new deal (whilst getting paid more) keep playing as well as he is and then letting someone buy him. What he wants to do is leave the club, bagging a huge signing on fee and leaving us without a penny for him and having to spend a fortune to replace him. All of course if he does run down his contract by the way.
If you can accept that behaviour from someone, shafting the club you love and support then fair enough.

I think we're going to see more and more players run down their contracts over the next decade, possibly to a point where transfer fees become the exception rather than the norm for elite players. $anch£z has shown how much money can be made by doing so, and clubs are already showing willing to wait for players to let their contracts run down. Ironically, this may also see a return to 'one club' players, as once you've got a superstar you'll pay whatever is necessary to keep him (Barca with Messi?)
I think/hope Sterling will stay, as I expect agreement to be reached. But I can understand why he might think it is worthwhile running down his contract if we're not prepared to offer close to what he thinks his worth is.

That's all this is, just a forum for blues to offer opinions is it not? The way our business is run these days, I would say no player is in a position to hold the club to ransom. He (as will others) will be offered what the club deem to be a fair amount and then he has to piss or get off the pot as I dont see the board being bullied by Sterling and his agent.In today's market what is Sterling worth salary wise! £200k, £250k or £300k a week?
If he leaves, what would it cost to replace him?
Sterling is in prime position to hold City to ransom, but on the other side of things, if he doesn't sign a deal before say end Jan, with our squad we can afford to bench him. Or if a big foreign club comes in with a £100M+ offer we accept and move on
It does seem fucking insane to me that a player doesn't believe £10M a year in wages plus whatever sponsorship for boots etc isn't enough
I understand that these are the elite in a highly paid profession and they're only at their peak earning potential for eight years or so, but fucking hell!

You are assuming the worst in me, I am not for one second saying he is running his contract down. ANOTHER poster asked the question how would we feel if he ran his contract down and left. Many people gave their opinions on it with quite a few agreeing with me. We have had irrelevant players in the past run their contracts down, not first team regulars who if they want to leave would command a very good sum of money for the club. Try reading what I put if you want to chip in.
Zabba,yaya,dave,sergio and vinny are all running contracts down,they are/were first teamers

You are digging a deeper hole here, if you are comparing a 23 year old who is probably worth 80 million plus to ageing players coming to the end of their careers then it is pointless even discussing.

How can't you read it any other way when at the end of the post you quoted I put "if he is trying to run his contract down of course" My post was with the scenario someone else said so I was replying as if he was running it down. This is basic human relations theory. Unless really poor, people compare relative wages, not absolute. And no matter how rich they become, they have a sense of injustice if someone perceived to be worse than them earns more.I don't believe it's a case of them not believing it's enough, more about if he's getting X then I want Y, more an ego thing than anything else.
Why? Because in our society, income is a value judgement, a statement of comparative worth.

I see the Google AI team has implemented a few improvements to the ‘adaptive recursive social engagement’ bots over the last few weeks. Their productivity has shot up substantially across multiple threads.

I am completing a survey for Ric to see if this beta phase is worth an investment in to a full roll out. ;-)
